ABOUT i-TEAM.CC: 2003 - 2021

i-Team was founded in the Portsmouth area in 2003 by Guy Watson as a non-commercial cycling club, affiliated to British Cycling, Cycling Time Trials, & more. It originally had a non-geographical base so you could represent i-Team in races and organised cycling events, wherever you lived in the U.K. Back in 2003 (before Facebook) the cycling club scene was very differe

nt to what it is today - very few clubs had a website, not many clubs had qualified coaches, most club runs were only on Sunday mornings, not all clubs were beginner friendly and if you were a beginner, it could be quite tricky getting in touch with your local club. i-Team changed all that going from 10 to 250 members in 3 years, organising weekly coaching sessions for up to 60 riders, taking a team of 40 novices to the 2005 Etape - it was an instant success. to become Go-ride registered and later gained Sport England ClubMark status. As well as introducing 100's of cyclists to the world of club cycling, it's British Cycling qualified coaches nutured home-grown youth members and helped them to progress in their sport and go on to win National, World & Olympic titles, including 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Dani King. By 2021however, having fulfilled and surpassed all his expectations, the decision was made by Guy Watson to close the club and go out on a high. The page will be maintained to preserve the many memories and acheivements of the former members.

Today is the day when we are all required to use facemasks in shops & takeaways and I will certainly be wearing one. There has been a lot of misinformation online about whether wearing face masks is a good thing or not - my take is it is is very a minor inconvenience in the scheme of things and something that we should do to protect others from infection and reduce the impact of a second wave. However I have seen people wearing masks whilst running and cycling, thinking this is also a good thing but this is not recommended by the WHO. So keep your mask in in your back pocket for when it’s needed - e.g. entering the cafe or shop to I buy a post-ride cake or coffee! - Guy

Great to see British Cycling announce their 6-Stage pathway leading back to when we can resume our normal club activities.

At present, the guidance is that we are at Stage 3, i.e., up to 6 individuals (from separate households) are allowed to ride together, providing they remain at least 2m apart - not how a group of experienced cyclist ride, following wheels on a proper club run.

Clearly this means we are not yet at a point where we can safely organise official club rides because even if individuals were able to maintain correct gaps whilst riding, we have to consider what will happen at junctions - some bunching would be inevitable. We also have to consider how people will assemble socially before, during and after the ride.

Therefore, for the time being, we encourage our members to ride individually, or in small self-organised groups, in accordance with the guidance from British Cycling below:

Due to the impact that the COVID-19 crisis has had on club activities in 2020, I have made the decision that all those who joined or who were up to date with their club membership subscription before June 1st., will have their current membership subscriptions extended through to 31st December 2021 - GW
