Alice 4 Charter

Alice 4 Charter Sailing in Alice from Portsmouth is a fantastic experience. A party up to 12 can enjoy a really good day or a week. Alice has cabins and bunks for 16. W.

Alice was built in 1954 as a steel, swim headed lighter, by J. Cook for Hubbocks, for whom she operated from the river Lea to the Lower Pool of London. At that time, she was towed or rowed. During the time she operated as a lighter, she was for a short time in the 1970’s used to supply the Pirate ship “Radio Caroline”. She was taken out of trade in 1994. Bought by Owen Emerson, he undertook ve

ry extensive work over the next 3 years. In 1998, with a refashioned bow and stern, all the necessary sailing, equipment, an engine and a fully fitted pine interior Alice was re-commissioned as a classic Thames Sailing Barge. Able to accommodate up to 40 people alongside the quay, or 12 when sailing, Alice has been owned since 2005 by the Gick family and operates in the Solent from Gun Wharf Quays, Portsmouth.

For those of you who may be wondering what has happened to Alice during the health crisis, you will be reassured to know that she is safe and well alongside in a boatyard in Hayling Island. She arrived there in October 2019 for the annual winter maintenance period so as to be ready for the 2020 season, but alas the 2020 season didn't happen. She has remained in Hayling Island where maintenance has been carried on as best as possible during the lockdown so she is looking very ship-shape and ready for the hoped-for 2021 cruising season. We can but hope. Here are a few photos of her alongside the jetty at Hayling Island.

A hot morning with a f2 easterly made the perfect start of a day charter to Priory bay. A team photo, then, with all helped we set all 5 sails – photo included to Show how she must have looked. On arrival Alice motored up the beach all climbing down the ladder and played in the sand with Wilson. The easterly blew the stern onto the sand and with only an hour left on the flood we had to push the bow s it pointed seaward and then, with a combination of most of us on the foredeck and full power Alice refloated. We spent an hour adrift whilst all enjoyed an excellent picnic lunch and with no wind we returned to Gun Wharf under power arriving at 1630. A really great day out – Hopefully to be repeated next year
