Portland Dig Deep to Draw Final League Fixture

Weymouth 2–2 Portland

Portland brought the curtain down on their league campaign with a courageous performance, overcoming extreme early adversity before eventually being denied all three points in a thrilling 2–2 draw against Weymouth.

With some key players unavailable, the Blues were already forced into reshaping their side. Jacob slotted into central defence alongside Saxon, while Morgan was pushed into midfield. Matters became even more challenging just three minutes in when Portland were reduced to ten men following an unfortunate accidental collision between goalkeeper Bradley and the Weymouth centre forward.

Ollie was quickly handed the gloves as Portland reorganised into a back three, but rather than retreat, the visitors continued to take the game to their hosts. Lucas and Rhys both tested the Weymouth back line early on, while Austin showed superb awareness to halt a dangerous counterattack with a perfectly timed interception on the left.

Against the run of play, Weymouth struck first, a neat cutback finished with a low shot that left stand-in keeper Ollie with no chance. The Blues responded impressively and began to exert control through the midfield quartet of Jack T, Kalen, Morgan and Eddie.

Sustained pressure followed, driven by an effective high press that won Portland a succession of corners. With Jack T delivering dangerous balls into the box, an equaliser felt inevitable. It duly arrived when Saxon rose highest to power a header beyond the Weymouth goalkeeper.

Portland weren’t done there. More pressure from another corner saw the ball cleared only as far as Kalen on the edge of the area. Enjoying one of his standout performances of the season, the midfielder unleashed a stunning effort over the crowd and into the far corner to give the Blues a deserved 2–1 lead at the break.

The second half saw Morgan and Eddie continue to provide the platform for Portland to build. Chances followed for Rhys and Jack T, but the Blues were unable to extend their advantage. At the other end, Ollie remained outstanding, producing another excellent save before bravely diving at the feet of an onrushing Weymouth striker.

Benji and Jack M were introduced to add fresh legs, but further injuries to Jack T and Lucas compounded the challenge in the closing stages. Eventually, sustained Weymouth pressure paid off as the hosts forced an equaliser.

There was late drama still to come when Jacob surged forward from centre-back and was brought down in the penalty area. Appeals were waved away, and the match ended level.

Despite missing out on a winning finale, manager Stu Burley was full of praise for his side:

“Going down to 10 so early could’ve been disastrous, but these lads kept playing for each other and showed real character in responding to adversity. The attitude and effort was absolutely top drawer today.”

A draw that felt like more than a point, Portland finished their season with pride firmly intact.

Frustrating Defeat for Portland U15s

It was a tough afternoon for Portland U15s as an encouraging performance ultimately went unrewarded.

Portland started brightly and went close early on when Lucas charged his way past his marker to go one‑on‑one, only for the Sports goalkeeper to get down well and save to his right. Moments later, Eddie cleverly flicked on a header for Jack T, but again the keeper reacted sharply to deny the Blues. Rhys then burst down the left and delivered a dangerous cross for Lucas, whose effort was once more kept out.

Despite Portland’s midfield dominance, it was the hosts who struck first. A swift counter‑attack ended with a deflected shot diverting past Brad to give Sports a 1–0 lead.

The Blues responded positively, piling on pressure through a succession of corners and half‑chances. Their persistence paid off when Rhys showed real determination, closing down the goalkeeper, nicking the ball and poking home a deserved equaliser. Soon after, a missed back pass gifted Portland the lead, with Lucas reacting quickest to slot home.

Sports were fortunate to claw their way back into the contest, doing so via the first of three penalties awarded against Portland. The Blues almost restored their advantage before half‑time when Char unleashed a fierce long‑range drive. The keeper could only parry, Jacob’s follow‑up was stopped, and then Eddie’s header flashed agonisingly over the bar.

The second half followed a familiar pattern, with Portland dominating possession but failing to turn chances into goals. Jacob headed wide, Rhys shot off target after a fine Lucas cross, and Eddie’s strong solo run ended with the ball drifting just past the post. Lucas then narrowly missed connecting with a superb delivery from Kalen, before Jacob saw yet another effort saved.

Against the run of play, Sports grabbed another lead with a rare attack finished by a toe‑poked effort. Kalen nearly replied immediately, firing narrowly wide. The decisive moment came in the 72nd minute as Portland conceded their second penalty, allowing Sports to stretch the scoreline to 4–2, before a third spot‑kick made it 5–2.

Portland did not give up and finally found the net again when Lucas produced a calm, low finish to reduce the deficit to 5–3. However, Sports added a final goal in the closing moments to seal what felt like an unlikely victory.

The Blues will be keen to put the disappointment behind them quickly as they turn their focus to a rare midweek evening fixture away at Chickerell.

Wessex Lions 2

A resurgent Wessex arrive at Fortress Bowl for a friendly today, as we near the end of another successful season in Dorset Div 1.

Matt and I wanted intensity and good passion based football and the lads all achieved this. We started off with a high press and this led to us being on the front foot. Some amazing attacking football and passing patterns lead to us taking a 4-0 lead into half time. Alex R scored 2, Ethan scored 1 and an owl goal.

The second half was more of an equal contest with the midfield being the place where the ball stayed due to both sides good intensity. Wessex scores 2 well taken goals but we ran out deserved winners.

A win for football as both sides did very well.

Onto our final league game, this coming Wednesday 🙌🔵⚽️

Well done to Amber, and all of the team! 💙⚽️

The team played their final home match of the season in what proved to be another challenging fixture. Although the team initially struggled to establish control of the game, their perseverance and determination were ultimately rewarded with an excellent goal from Kyran. This moment reflected the squad’s positive attitude and commitment to continuing their efforts throughout the match.

Notably, opposition parents commented on the team’s resilience, highlighting how the players maintained their energy and focus from the first whistle to the last.

The Player of the Match award was deservedly given to Amber, who delivered a highly determined performance and made several crucial challenges that contributed significantly to the team’s overall effort.
