Portishead Town produced a superb performance to hold Southern League Premier South side Wimborne Town to a goalless draw in the Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round โ and will perhaps consider themselves unfortunate not to have completed a memorable cup upset.
Two divisions separated the sides going into the tie, but there was precious little between them on the pitch. In fact, it was Posset who created many of the afternoon's clearest opportunities, with Wimborne goalkeeper Kai Campton producing a string of excellent saves to keep his side in the competition.
Portishead were buoyed by the return of Ollie Woodhouse, Matt Britton, Mitch Osmond and Jack Thorne to the starting line-up and settled quickly into the contest.
The first opening fell to the hosts when Lewis Williams was released beyond the Posset defence, but James Walker stood tall, forcing the Wimborne man wide before smothering his effort.
Moments later, Portishead came agonisingly close to taking the lead. The tireless Thorne robbed a Wimborne centre-back and raced through on goal, only for Campton to produce a superb double save to deny him.
The hosts looked to play directly from the back, but Woodhouse and Britton were outstanding at the heart of the Posset defence. They dominated aerially, repeatedly winning headers and ensuring Wimborne's forwards were given barely a moment's peace. On the occasions the hosts did find a yard of space, the men in red defended bravely, throwing bodies in the way of shots.
For all Wimborne's possession, it was Portishead who carried the greater cutting edge.
A flowing Posset move ended with Ethan Feltham collecting the ball on the right before sending an effort narrowly wide. Shortly afterwards, Kyle Egan was released down the left and fizzed a dangerous ball across the face of goal, with Feltham and Thorne both inches away from providing the decisive touch.
The Posset skipper then went close himself. Egan was sent clear and rounded Campton, but the goalkeeper had done enough to force him wide. As Egan looked for a teammate in the middle, Campton recovered brilliantly to make himself big and block the ball.
At the other end, 17-year-old Rio Fitton continued to show maturity well beyond his years. Solid defensively and intelligent in choosing his moments to join the attack, Fitton produced another excellent display before picking up a knock shortly before the interval which forced his withdrawal at half-time.
Portishead then came within inches of taking a deserved lead just before the break.
Owen Humphries, whose direct running and ability to glide beyond defenders caused Wimborne problems throughout, combined with Thorne, who found Feltham in space. The striker's driven effort looked destined for the net, but Campton produced another outstanding save to tip the ball onto the crossbar.
Goalless at the interval, but with plenty of encouragement for the travelling Posset support.
Any expectation that the higher-ranked hosts would take control after the restart was quickly dispelled as Portishead continued where they had left off.
Thorne was again released through on goal and again found Campton in his way. The loose ball was eventually recycled to Humphries on the left, whose deflected cross appeared to be heading into the net until the Wimborne goalkeeper somehow stuck out an arm and clawed it back into his arms.
In midfield, Jamie Adams and Mitch Osmond covered an enormous amount of ground, closing down their opponents, winning tackles and repeatedly regaining possession.
Half-time substitute Aron Robbins was equally impressive, marshalling Wimborne's dangerous wide players while also providing support for Humphries down the left.
As the game entered its final ten minutes, Wimborne finally found a rare sight of goal. Will Fletcher took aim and forced Walker into a good save. Williams was lurking for the rebound, but Harvey Tierney produced a vital block to prevent the hosts from capitalising.
It was another huge moment from Tierney, who had been magnificent at left-back during the opening 45 minutes before switching seamlessly to the right following Fitton's withdrawal.
Wimborne enjoyed their best spell of sustained possession as the final whistle approached, but Portishead's discipline and determination never wavered.
Every player played their part, perhaps best exemplified by centre-forward Feltham tracking all the way back into the right-back position to make a vital defensive block.
And Posset were not content simply to protect the draw.
Josh Jenkins and Jaden Neale were introduced from the bench and worked tirelessly to keep the home defence occupied, with Neale flashing an effort narrowly wide as the contest entered stoppage time.
There was also time for new signing Mike Baker to make his Portishead debut before the final whistle confirmed a result that ensures the two sides will have to do it all again.
The fact that Wimborne goalkeeper Kai Campton was named Man of the Match perhaps told the story better than anything else.
This wasn't simply a case of Portishead surviving against a team two divisions above. Posset went toe-to-toe with their Southern League Premier opponents, created the clearer opportunities and were denied on several occasions by an inspired goalkeeper.
Backed throughout by a superb and vocal travelling support, every player in red can take immense pride from a disciplined, brave and hugely impressive performance.
And perhaps the biggest compliment of all is that Portishead will return home disappointed not to have won it.
The reward is another FA Cup night under the lights at Bristol Road.
