Portishead Bowling Club

Portishead Bowling Club Our Men’s & Ladies Bowling Clubs welcome bowlers of all ages and ability. Come along to any Monday Club morning @ 10.00am from 13th April to have a go!

Both clubs, men and ladies, belong to The Association of Portishead Bowling Clubs. The Association runs and manages our beautiful site adjacent to the Lake Grounds in Portishead. This site has two bowling greens each with its own recreation and changing facilities. Club sessions take place every Monday throughout the bowls season starting at 10.00am. Old and new members participate in these on a r

egular basis and we are always assured of a good turnout. Prospective new members or anyone interested in taking up Bowls will be welcome at these sessions and coaching is available for everyone interested in taking up the sport. If you think this might be you, please contact us to arrange a taster session.

Yesterday Rod Hawkins took himself off to South Petherton to compete in the Somerset County Finals. Rod had previously come through 3 rounds to play in the final rounds of the Club Officials trophy. He managed a nail biting win over Fiona Waters in the semi final coming home at 21 - 20 πŸ‘πŸ€© Just over an hour later it was the final against Neil Kunc, a previous multiple holder of the cup, however Neil showed his expertise and managed a 21 - 15 win. Congratulations on a great run Rod, here’s to next year! 🀭

This morning saw our annual Ladies v Men match and what a colourful affair it was! Well done to all those who came along in their very bright tops. The ladies best top was won by Carol Parker and for the men it was Tony Benford (πŸ‘šπŸ‘• think colour!)

It was a bit dull, damp and chilly but played with good humour and great fun. The Ladies came a not so close second however this year they managed two very good rink wins, so watch this space πŸ‘€!

Thanks to the men for hosting and supplying the welcome half time Swiss roll, biscuits and teas and the drinks afterwards 🀩 Cheers to John on the bar πŸΊπŸ‘ and well done to the Men on your win πŸ‘πŸ‘

Monday Finals Day was a bit chillier than expected however the matches were red hot and all played in a very friendly atmosphere πŸ€— Very well done to all finalists and the winners.

Ladies Club Champion was contested between Maggie Wilks and Jacqui Lane. Jacqui managed the win with an impressive game for a new bowler πŸ‘πŸ†

Men’s Club Champion was between Rod Hawkins and Dave Linsdale and Rod prevailed and bowled his way to an excellent win πŸ‘πŸ†

Men’s Points (Hayes Cup) saw Niall Morrissey against Dave King. In another well contested match Niall overcame Dave to win the trophy πŸ‘πŸ†

The Saplings Cup, this is new this year for all our first time bowlers in coaching. A fun competition that resulted in Chris Newman playing against Dave Williams. A great match from both players in which Chris came out the winner πŸ‘πŸ†

Men’s Sid Woods Trophy had Bob Hinton playing against Clive Hicks. Clive managed to overcome Bob in the final ends but a great match πŸ‘πŸ†

Ladies Points was another very close match and well played by Irene Benford and Janet Linaker. Janet managed to pull away at the end for a great win πŸ‘πŸ†

Ladies Fixed Jack saw Joy Murray versus Maggie Wilks. Joy played very well however Maggie focused well and her bowls were well placed to gain her a win πŸ‘πŸ†

Men’s Pairs put Mike Parker & Rod Hawkins against Tony Benford & Andy Wilson. What a long match that was! Mike and Rod won convincingly in the end but it was a struggle at times πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ†

Ladies 2 wood pairs saw Helen Luffman and Jacqui Lane against Sarah Howcroft and Polly Smith. A good competitive game which resulted in Helen & Jacqui winning the prize πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ†

Finals weekend 2026 has started and on Thursday Rod Hawkins became Men’s Veterans champion after his match against Dave Linsdale πŸ‘πŸ†
Saturday continued with two more finals and produced Maggie Wilks as the winner of the Ladies Two Wood Singles competition after a great match against Janet LinakerπŸ‘πŸ†
The Ladies Triples started out, playing a nail biting, close match for the first 9 ends when the rain came and spoiled the game as the green became waterlogged and play had to be abandoned πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Luckily the puddles dried out and the concluding 9 ends saw Helen Luffman, Jacqui Lane and Carol Mellis gain a win over Irene Benford, Sarah Howcroft and Polly Smith. Well done to all finalists πŸ‘πŸ€©
Play continues tomorrow with another 4 finals however as the weather is not looking kind in the afternoon, 3 matches will start at 10.30am. The Mens Silver Jubilee is still scheduled for 2.30pm so no more rain dances please 🌞

Portishead Ladies Captain & President’s Day 2026 πŸ₯³

Despite the downpour overnight we enjoyed a fabulous afternoon of fun bowls followed by a delicious afternoon tea with Prosecco. Some very entertaining speeches including a bit of singing proved to be a hit! 🎢

Congratulations to Janet on accruing a fabulous 42 points to win the bowls games πŸ‘πŸ†
Many thanks to all those who donated raffle prizes and bought tickets. We had a special β€˜Guess the name of the elephant’ this year in place of the traditional spider. Well done Diane on guessing β€˜Pasha’ and winning the fabulous crocheted elephant beautifully made by Polly.🧢
Special thanks to those who gave up their time setting up the rinks, preparing the pavilion, arranging the flowers, running the raffle, manning the bar and clearing up afterwards all helping to make a fabulous afternoon 🀩
