U8 Dolphins vs Parley - Match Report

Sunday morning saw the Dolphins travel to unbeaten Parley, where we were asked to bat first.

Our opening pair of Tejas and Nate managed 36 for the loss of 2 to start us on our way.

Some good middle over consolidation from Seb and debutant Eli amassed 43 without loss, before our final pair of Dylan and Ashton cut loose with a cracking 63/2, without loss Dylan almost making his half century.

Parley are top for a reason and batted very well, taking it to the very last ball where a wicket would have won it for us. It was not to be however and Parley won by just 5 runs. Seb’s figures of 2-0-9-1 the standout of our fielding display.

Some great batting by the Dolphins, but perhaps not quite on par was our fielding which is where Poole sides traditionally win our games. Lots of learning and a big well done to Eli who was unfazed on debut with a classy 18 off 11 balls.

Good work Dolphins!

Under 10 Piranhas vs Verwood - Match Report

The Piranhas had a different look to them on Friday night, as the scourge on cricket that is the Baden Powell Fayre struck once again. As such a much younger side took the field, on a grass wicket no less, as Verwood opted to bat first.

The pace of Ranga was too much for the opening batters on a seaming deck, as he picked up both of them in his first 2 overs. Their number 3 however was the real batter in their side and he diced up our attacked with 27 from 14 balls on his way to a swift retirement. This knock proved to be the only difference between the two sides.

Whilst he was scoring, we were still picking up wickets elsewhere. Leon bagged their number 4 clean bowled, much to her disbelief. Leon he also got a direct run out during Dylan's 2 over spell, which incidentally only went for a single run. Our ace in the hole was our overseas quick, flown in for this match, Finn Hamson, who took 2 for 7 and was delighted to knock over some poms with his first overs on English soil. Kitty and Leo were tight at the end but it was Ivy who finally dislodged the last Verwood batter to end their innings on 70ao, underlining an excellent fielding performance.

However, the wicket had already proved difficult to bat on with only a single Verwood batter who seemed able to play it. It proved so for us as well as we just couldn't get anyone firing against an experienced bowling line-up. Despite our best efforts we were skittled for just 32. So some really brilliant bowling from both sides on a bowler friendly wicket. Verwood were by far the better team, but the margin of victory was much closer than the pre-game predictions. A cracking effort for a very young side that were much more used to pairs cricket. Good effort Piranhas

Under 11 Dolphins vs Blandford - U11 Cup Quarter Final

A surprisingly drizzly Saturday morning at the park for our u11 cup match. Having been put in to bat, we found it a hard track to bat on, with the dampness making for a slow, low wicket that was tough to run on. Nevertheless, we accumulated nicely in our usual fashion, with both our openers, Seth and Jesse, retiring. This was swiftly followed by retirements for Fred at 3 and Barney at 4. Archie glued together the rest of the innings with his 17* as Noah retired and Micah was run out for a useful 9 off 5 pushing for extra runs in the last over. A handy total of 209 had been set.

Kyan opened the bowling with some left arm spin, and it was he that made the first breakthrough, taking a sharp caught and bowled to dismiss the opener. The other opener batted with grit and determination and retired after a well constructed innings. It wasn't until the 14th over that we made our next breakthrough as Barney bowled their number 4. This opened the floodgates somewhat as Barney claimed another and then Fred switched to off spin and took 4-fer, including the previously retired batter who had come back only to see himself caught by Seth at midwicket. Blandford all out and short of the target.

A good performance and onto the semi finals we go, where Verwood await. Well done Dolphins.

U11 PTCC Piranhas vs Wimborne Wildcats

It was a tricky morning for U11 Piranhas at Poole Grammar. There wasn’t much sign of a heatwave when we were inserted to bat in damp conditions. We started solidly enough, but thereafter there was a steady flow of wickets, with 38/2 eventually becoming 56 all out. To their credit, Wimborne bowled straight and well, and life was made trickier by a few run-outs.

Credit to Ted and Jack, who each stuck around resolutely for some time, but with only one player reaching double figures we were well short of a total that was likely to challenge the opposition.

Notwithstanding that, we set out determined to take early wickets and restrict the opposition's runs. James produced a good ball to claim an early scalp, but Wimborne's other opener played some great shots and they eased to a comfortable win.

It wasn't a day where much went our way - when Sam took a good catch off a no ball it just about summed it up - but everyone put in a good effort, and we will look forward to putting our best foot forward next week 💪

Match report - Poole Town Girls U11 vs Winton CC

After 2 consecutive washouts in the U11 league, the PTCC girls made a welcome return on a sunny evening at Slades Farm to face Winton.

Captain Mabel lost the toss and we were asked to field. Pippa opened the bowling with a fast, straight over - on course for a maiden after 5 balls and hitting the stumps with the 6th, only for the Poole Town umpire at square leg to spoil the fun calling a tight no ball on height. Mia kept the pace up, taking a wicket in her first over. Mabel, Ava, Imogen and Grace all bowled economically. Especially so in the last two overs, Grace only giving 1 run off the penultimate over and Imogen removing the bails with the final ball of the innings - what a useful 5 runs that might turn out to be…

Winton came out of the blocks bowling tightly, Pippa and Grace each falling once - Grace well caught by Ava sub fielder for an under strength Winton showing the spirit of cricket is alive and well! As Mabel and Imogen came to bat, a ‘high risk, high reward’ running strategy between the wickets ensued but it paid off - one misjudged run out outweighed by the byes and singles scored with Mabel’s backing up. Mia and Ava continued the quick running between the wickets and the game was tight, with 6 needed off the last over. Ava’s 4 put us on our way and Poole Town won by 5 runs.

Full credit to Winton, missing a couple of players to an U13 fixture against Poole at PGS. They bowled very well and gave little away. The difference between the sides was our hunger to run extras and turn ones into twos. It’s something we’ve talked about and worked on, so great to see all 6 batters putting it into practice for a close fought win tonight 👏

PTCC U9s Dolphins Vs Wimbourne U9 Warriors

The Dolphins travelled to the picturesque home ground of Wimbourne on Saturday morning to face a Wimbourne side who were licking their wounds from a few close losses. Captain for the day, Will T called heads but luck was not on his side and Wimbourne quickly put us in to bat. Being the picturesque ground that it is, Wimbourne is missing just one thing- an astro pitch (this is up for debate), but it did mean the boys were presented with a new challenge - hard ball cricket on a grass wicket prepared in the outfield. No easy task, especially when being put into bat without a second thought.

But before I go on, a very well done goes to all the parents for successfully navigating their way to the ground despite the road closures and one way streets, with no warning before hand.

Now on to the cricket -

Ranga and Leon opened the batting, and set about their task of creating a foundation for the innings to grow from in fine style with Ranga swatting the first ball for 4. Runs were harder to follow as expected, but a steady pace had been set and importantly no wickets were lost. They finished on 24/0. Next up were Owen and Henry who ran well between the wickets, accumulating the majority of their runs in singles. They finished on 21/1. Will T and Louis came out swinging, looking to push the run rate up. With 1 boundary apeice they made 31/1. Our last pair Henley and Will B came out work some work still to do, but faced a barrage of bowling and did well to keep it out on this green top. Henley especially did well to fend off a few short balls and swatting a 4 along the way. A special mention goes to the Wimbourne fielder who came rushing in from deep mid-wicket to dive and cling on to a high ball from Will B. They eventually finished with 19/2.

All meaning we finished on 95 for 4.

Only loosing 4 wickets after being put into bat on the first grass wicket they've played on, was a real sign of how talented these kids are. Very well done all of them. This is even more important because it means they are learning the importance of not just scoring runs, but also not getting out. A big innings and team total is built from a solid defence and not giving your wicket away.

But batting is only half the game. Next up was Wimbournes innings. First up was the eager Will B, who set the tone for the rest to follow with 2 wickets in 2 balls, in what turned out to be a double wicket maiden! Great start.
Wickets fell at regular intervals and Wimbourne struggled to build any momentum. If a boundary was hit, they were soon pegged back by a wicket. The pressure was kept on brilliantly in the field by the boys ground fielding skills.
At the end of their innings Wimbourne were 79/12.

Meaning PTCC ran out winners by 56 runs.

Today felt like two very good sides going head to head and executing their skills to the max. Considering this was their first real test on a grass wicket against an equally skilled team, they all came away having contributed to a good team performance, and deserved the victory.

Special mentions go to Captain Will T for his 2 for 4, Louis got his 2 for 20 (but in reality it will be less due to a scorecard error) and Owen for his 2 for 11.
But surely man of the match must go to Will B for an astounding 2 wickets for 0 runs from his 2 overs!

Under 11 Dolphins vs Wimborne Warriors - Match report

The Leaze is always a tricky place to play cricket, with a grass ‘wicket’ and a small boundary. It proved as much again for the Dolphins on Saturday morning.

Wimborne opened the batting with both openers fluent, until Noah had one of them bowled with a lovely, seaming delivery.

However, the other opener and Wimborne’s 3 both went on to retire, meaning we were a little behind the 8 ball at 80/1. Finley made a breakthrough when we needed it most, spinning one past the left hander and onto his off stump. Tight bowling followed, with Seth picking up another bowled off his pads, and then a mix up led to a run out from Noah. The last ball of the innings was another wicket as Seth bowled a 2nd, meaning we were chasing 113 to win.

We made the perfect start to our reply as Seth launched the first ball for a maximum over extra cover. Indeed, we looked good until we lost our first wicket caught at cover when we were on 27.

Unfortunately, our inexperience on grass told as we lost a few quick wickets for low scores, and we panicked with a few run out situations trying to keep the scoreboard moving. Seth (25*) and Jesse (17) managed to get us halfway to the total, but in the end we fell well short.

A highly competitive division 1 is still very much alive, but the Dolphins will need to play their best cricket from here on out.

U11 Piranhas vs Parley Pirates

On an idyllic morning, Reuben won the toss and we chose to bowl first. Parley started slowly, with Jack and Dylan tightening the screw by quickly reeling off 4 good overs in a row to leave Parley struggling a little at 32/1 after 7.

The bowling and fielding remained good, and Ted did well behind the stumps, but Parley figured out that they needed to attack more and produced some good shots as they threatened to breach 100. This was before Max returned for the last over, emphatically hitting the stumps for his second and third times of the day to restrict Parley to 94/3 off 16.

In reply, Jasper and Dylan negotiated a decent first couple of Parley overs and then prospered to set us well on the way to victory, running hard on a big outfield to take advantage of the aggressive field placings.

We were helped by a good amount of extras, and Dylan retired with an impressive 27* as we eased over the line with 4 and a half overs to spare.

Well played everyone - our strong team bowling performance set us up for this win 👏

*U12 Dolphins vs Winton*

Our good start to the season continued with a solid win at the park tonight.

The smell of sausages on the club BBQ spurred our team on taking regular wickets, 3 for Elijah, 2 for Wilson, 1 for Zosia, 1 for Harrison. Winton finished on 59.

Louis and Jakey built solidly. Louis reached 17, Jakey also reached 17 and Will smashed 16 off 10 balls. With extras added, we reached our target after 8.4 overs and victory by 6 wickets.

Job done with some sterntests to come.

The U12 Division 1 makes pleasant reading with both Poole teams 1st and 2nd 🙂.

Under 12 Piranhas vs Wimborne Wolves - Match Report

Not much cricket recently due to the weather, so this was a welcome return on a bright evening at QE.

Batting first, we realised a par score would be lower than usual thanks to the large boundary and long grass. Running would be key.

We lost Fred for 7 but Seth and Archie put on a stand on 39 for the 2nd wicket before Seth was run out on 22. Archie got to a run a ball 18 with Jesse(12) and Kalei(12) adding useful lower order runs to take us up to 111/7 for our 16 overs. Below par?

Not on this pitch and not with how we started. 2 great catches by Seth and Barney off of Archie and a run out from Fred in the first 3 overs saw Wimborne rocking at 5 for 3. There was a rally, but we kept chipping away with wickets. Kalei had one caught behind by Jesse off a big top edge as Micah provided economical bowling from the other end. Fred chipped in with a wicket before Barney ran out another with a direct hit from cover. Seth provided a neat finish to the game as he bowled Wimborne’s top scorer with the last ball.

A very good performance after a bit of a break, as well as a collection of slightly bruised ankles that seemed to heal themselves after the first few runs (don’t ask). Wimborne are an excellent side, but we raised our game, played intelligent cricket and ran out deserved winners. We’ll see how we go against most of these players again tomorrow
