Matchday 12

Willington Quay 5-1 Ponteland Dragons

After a few forced weeks off due to the weather the Dragons travelled to Willington quay in a league match against one of the promotion favourites.

Pont started well and after an opening exchange between the two teams with few chances the Dragons got a foot in the game and produced a good spell of pressure resulting in. Number of corners and chances. However it was Willington who took the lead. The goal came from a Dragons corner which Willington broke quickly and got behind our defence to take the lead after a quick counter attack.

Pont responded well and put the opposition under more pressure and were rewarded when a cross by Felix was put in by Nate with a well taking goal. As half time drew closer Willington stated applying more pressure as the dragons were forced to sit deep in the closing stages of the first half.

The second half started quite even and the Dragons were unfortunate to concede a second when their defender tried to clear a loose ball which hit a Willington quay player on the back and deflected into the goal.

Pont struggled to recover after this and for a good while were under pressure as Willington continued to press and score a further three goals without a reply from the Dragons. Pont did finish strongly creating a few late chances though and were far from disgraced.

📣 R E C O G N I T I O N

Ponteland United would like to say a huge congratulations to Riley!

Riley has been offered a place with Sunderland AFC U14 Player Development Centre for season 25/26.

A founding member of our U14 Dragons Riley’s development over the last 7 years has been exceptional to watch.

Although Riley typically plays on the wing his abilty to read the game allows him to constantly come infield, break up play and turn defence into attack. He has a formidable engine, getting up and down the pitch with ease. Coupled with his skilful attributes, Riley is one of them players oppositions hate playing against.

Well done Riley!

Match day 9

Cramlington Panthers 4-1 Ponteland Utd Dragons

Yesterday saw the Dragons travel to Cramlington for their first league fixture against the Panthers having earlier got knocked out of the league cup by them. In the previous game against Cramlington the Dragons got off to the worst start conceding straight from kick off so a lot of emphasis was put onto the players about keeping it tight in the opening minutes.

Once again Cramlington started strong and Pont struggled to gain much possession In the opening ten minutes as Cramlington caused problems, however the Dragons defence stood strong as Cramlington were reduced to taking long range shots that rarely troubled our keeper.

After a couple of positional changes midway through the first half the dragons started getting a foot into the game and became much more competitive, matching the Panthers. The Dragons were unlucky not to go ahead with ten minutes of the half remaining after a scramble in the box the ball fell kindly to Harry on the edge of the box who thumped the ball off the underside of the cross bar.

With the game edging towards half time the game was end to end as both teams looked for the opening goal. Unfortuantly for the Dragons that came from Cramlington in the final minute of the half as they took the lead.

Into the second half and the game pretty much continued where it left off with both teams pushing for a goal. About 10 minutes into the half the next goal came, and again it was Cramlington who extended the lead.

The Dragons weren’t going to lie down though and with in a couple of minutes of the restart Pont had pulled a goal back. Some neat play down the left hand side starting in defence with Evangeline then Thomas played a one two with Riley as he made his way into the box finishing well to give the Dragons hope.

That seemed to spur on the Dragons and they began pushing more and enjoying their best spell of possession creating a number of chances. However as the Dragons took risks pushing players forward Cramlington remained a real threat on the counter attack and that proved to be the case with 15 mins remaining where the Dragons lost possession high up the pitch only for the Panthers to quickly play a long ball over the top to their number 14 who was their standout player. He quickly ran at goal and slotted home making it 3-1.

The Dragons continued searching for a goal though but again after a corner from Pont, Cramlington quickly broke again putting the result beyond doubt as they added their forth.

That’s now three games without a win for the Dragons but although the results haven’t went our way no one can complain with the performances of the players.

With no game this coming weekend the Dragons can enjoy a week off and come back fully charged for their next game at home to Newbiggin Hall.

Matchday 8

Ponteland Utd Dragons 2-3 Burradon Yellows

An early kick off on a chilly morning saw the Dragons take on Burradon in the league on home soil. The Dragons got off to the worst possible start however as Burradon took the kick off and between their two forward players ran through the Pont team scoring before a Dragon had even touched the ball.

Pont restarted the game and quickly enjoyed a nice spell of possession playing some neat football at times but were unable to create any real meaningful chances as Burradon defended well. With the opposition deciding to play long at every opportunity the Dragons had to be alert as their two forwards were clearly their man danger causing problems everytime they had the ball.

The tactics paid off midway through the first half as Burradon, with only their real second chance, made it 2-0. The Dragons continued trying to push for a goal but lost their way a little as Burradon enjoyed a few more chances as half time edged closer.

The second half began and Pont came out quicker than they did on the first half and put Burradon under some early pressure. A good save by their keeper saw the resulting corner kick taken quickly by Smudger who played it short to Felix. A menace since coming on, Felix took an early shot from the corner of the box as he rifled it into the top far corner.

With the Dragons in the ascendancy the chances started to fall their way as Riley had a shot from a tight angle cleared from the line but minutes later was able to get on the end of a teasing cross from Felix to fire home from virtually the same spot.

The game opened up as we went into the final 15 minutes with both teams causing each other problems in their final third. Burradon were awarded a spot kick only to hit the bar as the Dragons were able to clear the rebound away and the Dragons went close at the other end as the minutes ticked away. However with only minutes left a quick counter attack from Burradon after a Pont corner put their main striker through who slotted home his third of the game giving Burradon a late winner.

A draw would have probably been a fair result but for the second week running the Dragons have conceded a late goal something which they will hope to avoid next week when they travel to Cramlington.

Matchday 7 - League

Whitley bay 4-4 Ponteland Utd Dragons

The Dragons returned to league action today looking to go top with a win. They travelled to Whitley bay for an early kick off on a difficult pitch which would have been more suited to a 8 aside game rather than an 11 aside.

Despite the tight, small pitch the dragons got off to a promising start attacking Whitley bay from the first whistle. As Whitley bay seemed happy to lump the ball forward at any opportunity the Dragons tried to play with the ball on the ground and were rewarded with the opening goal after a great run from Marisa down the right wing. As she’s done already a number of times, she made her way into the box and finished in the bottom corner from a tight angle.

With the Dragons having the upper hand they continued pushing and got a well deserved second on 17 mins. This time Riley split the defence finding Libby who cool as you like finished with a well taken goal. Only 5 minutes later and the goal of the game came. With some neat passes and a number of one twos down the left, the ball fell to Smudger who put the ball through for Libby to grab her second.

The Dragons were dominating play however whitely play pulled one back with a few minutes of the half remaining.

The second half started in similar fashion with Pont dictating the play and they didn’t have to wait long to regain their 3 goal cushion. Again after brilliant play from Marisa, the winger found space in the box to fire a ball across the face of goal and Riley was quickest to react putting the ball into the net from 4 yards out.

Whitley Bay continued trying to play long balls and caught out the Pont defence midway through the second half with their second goal of the game. With the Dragons already short of numbers in defence, the outstanding James was forced off having played the majority of the game carrying an injury. With so many players now playing out of position the Dragons lost control and Whitley Bay added a third to set up a tense last minutes.

With Whitley bay now putting pressure on the Dragons goal it was a nervy finish with Carter pulling off a number of great saves and some last ditch tackles keeping Whitley bay out. However in the final two minutes the Pont keeper dived down saving again and after barely 5 seconds of having the ball the referee, who failed to count down with his hand raised, penalised the keeper having judged him to keep the ball for more than the 8 seconds allowed.

Awarding Whitley Bay a corner the Dragons failed to clear and the opposition scored drawing level. It was a cruel way to finish the game, a game where only one team wanted to play football and a decision wrongly given cost us.

The Dragons can take a lot of positives from the game however and look forward to their next game which is at home.

Matchday 6 - county cup

Ponteland Utd Dragons 2-6 Newcastle East End

The Dragons today hosted a very strong Newcastle East End in the County Cup. With a couple of absentees the Dragons faced their toughest game of the season hoping to progress.

Just as they did last week the Dragons got off to a slow start struggling to find their rhythm. Despite an early chance coming their way East End took the lead early in the first half. Pont were 2-0 down midway through the first off and failed to create many chances until they finally started finding some joy in the attacking third.

A few corners gave the Dragons hope but didn’t manage to convert any of them as half time loomed. A slight change in the system at half time allowed us to push an extra person up into midfield and soon into the second half the Dragons were awarded a freekick some 20 yards out. Felix immediately decided it was his to take and hit a shot which the keeper could only get a hand to as we reduced the deficit.

There was hope that the Dragons could repeat last weeks incredible second half spell, but East End were completely different opposition. Technically good and physically strong and with in a few mins of the Dragons scoring, East End restored their two goal lead.

This pont team never give up and they battled away creating a few half chances and made sure East end would have to work until the end. East end did extended their lead thanks mainly to their Number 9 who the Dragons couldn’t contain as they went 5-1 up.

A nice through ball put through the Dragons striker who converted with ease to pull back a second. Minutes later and Riley found himself through on goal but pulled his shot wide. Had that gone in it could have been a nervy last ten minutes for East end but it wasn’t to be.

East end scored another inside the final few minutes as they took the deserved 6-2 win and went into the hat for the next round. Good luck to East End who will surely take some stopping.
