Upton United Women 1-0 Normanton Pro Stars Goaldiggers ️

What a way to start!

In their first ever league game as a newly formed team, Upton United Women secured a fantastic 1-0 victory over Normanton Pro Stars Goaldiggers. As expected, there were plenty of nerves before kick-off, but every single player overcame them. Once the game settled down, the team grew into the match and showed great character and put in to practise, everything they have worked on over the summer. An unsettled start to the game saw Normanton with their first chance at goal early on, but Courtney was lively in between the sticks and put in some great saves. After the opening 10 minutes, Upton settled and began looking the better of the two sides. A dangerous Normanton attack was stopped brilliantly by Liz on the edge of her own area. She calmly slipped the ball into Becky, who spotted the run and delivered an excellent long ball forward. Abbie took a superb first touch, turned brilliantly to skip past the last defender, and then drove a powerful low shot into the bottom corner. An outstanding finish and a goal worthy of winning any game!

The team then showed great resilience and determination to hold onto their lead and record a clean sheet in their historic first league fixture.

Coaches' Lass of the Grass: Abbie was a constant threat all game, who worked tirelessly to create opportunities and stretch the opposition defence. 👏👏

Opposition Lass of the Grass: Captain Nat-tastic led by example in midfield, covering every blade of grass. From defence to attack and back again, she never stopped running and gave absolutely everything for the team. 👏👏

A special mention goes to Courtney, who put her body on the line and pulled off some brilliant saves to keep us in the lead. 👏👏
