Every child wants to win and thats not an issue. The issue is when adults want to win so badly that only a handful of children get their fair share of play time.

Because if we are truly stepping forward to develop children to have a love for the game, opportunities need to be shared.

You can't develop from the sidelines.

Equal playing time is the hottest topic in youth sports.

Some despise it, some embrace it whilst others mixed things up.

But when you look at the research around child development, motivation, and long-term participation, a different picture emerges.

Children who play more tend to enjoy sport more. Children who enjoy sport more are more likely to stay in sport. Children who stay in sport longer have more opportunities to develop.

At 8 years old, we know who the best player is today. We don't know who the best player will be at 16.

Which is why equal playing time is often used in the foundation phase by many but should that stop when we reach the next stage?

Personally I advocate for equal opportunities over a season from u12s+ as opposed to equal playing time per game.

What's your view on equal playing time in youth football?
