When a horse feels heavy in the hand or drifts through the shoulder, most riders look at the front end.
It’s what you can see.
But as I often say in lessons:
“Whilst they focus on the front end… what about what’s happening behind?”
If the hind legs aren’t stepping properly underneath and the core isn’t engaging, the front end has to compensate.
That’s when you feel:
– heaviness ⚖️
– uneven contact
– drifting in transitions
You can’t fix a balance problem in front if it’s being created behind.
When the hind legs switch on:
“All of a sudden the core and the back are like, oh okay, you need us to be involved.”
Improving the push, connection …
And the contact softens.

If your horse feels heavy, don’t just adjust the reins.
Ask what the hind legs are doing.
