We’re inviting more Plymouth primary schools to take part in Sea in Our School🌊

*Plymouth primary schools* can now register their interest to take part from September 2026.

Delivered with the Ocean Conservation Trust , the programme helps young people see Plymouth Sound as something they’re part of. They learn about the wildlife, the stories and the stretch of sea that sits right alongside the city.

🚤 Something new has arrived in the water…

You might have seen our new pontoon taking shape outside the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre. It’s an exciting addition to your National Marine Park and we can’t wait to share it with you.

For now, the pontoon is still a live construction site, so we are asking everyone to give it space and avoid boarding, swimming from it or mooring to it while work is ongoing.

Thanks for giving it space for now.
Stay tuned for updates and we will let you know as soon as it is ready to use.

Happy World Ocean Day🌊

Today, your National Marine Park is celebrating collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation in the marine world with the launch of 15 new British Sign Language signs for native species in Plymouth Sound🙌

At Plymouth University’s Marine Station, we welcomed an inspiring range of speakers, local and international, who explored how deaf communities are not only engaging with marine environments, but also shaping and leading the future of marine science.

A huge thank you to all our partners who made today’s Project MUFFIN launch and the very first Marine Deaf Day such a success: the University of Edinburgh’s BSL Glossary Project, the Scottish Sensory Centre, Erasmus+ and international collaborators, the University of Plymouth, and the Ocean Conservation Trust and the Marine Biological Association. Together, we are building a more inclusive and accessible future for marine science.

And a special thank you to Plymouth Dance for their powerful and moving performance celebrating our marine ecosystem.

Happy National Volunteers Week!

Together with Plymouth City Council, we threw open the doors of th iconic Tinside Lido - Plymouth Active to celebrate city-wide volunteers with live music, food, drinks and that unbeatable panoramic view over Plymouth Sound National Marine Park.

From community groups and beach cleaners to event stewards and everyday helpers, this evening was all about you - the people who quietly and passionately give your time and make a big splash for Britain’s Ocean City.

Thank you for everything you do to keep our city and our sea alive, welcoming and full of pride. Here’s to you, and here’s to many more nights like this. 💙🌊

Great news! We are one step closer to the commencement of the restoration of the historic Garden Battery here at Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park (Official) .

As part of the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, Mount Edgcumbe is one of the key gateways to the Sound and like the other areas we are working to transform how people connect with the area’s rich maritime heritage.

One of the first steps to this is appointing contractors to undertake the work. When you visit the Park you will be able to see as the project evolves.

So, what exactly is the Garden Battery? It is a granite casement battery that dates back to 1862, constructed following a recommendation from the Royal Commission in 1860. Built on the site of an earlier saluting battery, it originally housed ten guns to defend the mouth of the Hamoaze and surrounding channel. By 1910, two searchlights had been installed in former gun casements. The site was one of the first to use Defensive Electric Lights, pre-WW1 and was key to protecting the port in both wars. The guns and lights were removed in 1927, and the Ministry of Defence relinquished the site in 1946, however, it’s key role in both wars is still remembered today.
