Do you struggle with your breaststroke kick?

Breaststroke is my fifth-best stroke! 😂

As I’ve got older and learned more about the stroke, I’ve realised that my own kick has always been limited by my hip mobility. This affects my ability to achieve an effective position during the recovery and generate power through the propulsive phase of the kick.

It’s also one of the reasons I love coaching breaststroke. The kick is not simply about trying harder or turning the feet out more. A swimmer’s mobility, strength, coordination and technique can all influence how effectively they perform the movement.

Understanding what is limiting the movement allows us to coach the swimmer, rather than simply asking everyone to produce the same technique.

Strength and conditioning is not just about lifting heavier weights. It can help swimmers develop the mobility, strength and control needed to access better positions and transfer more power into the water.

No gym? No problem!

You don’t need a gym to complete a land training session that supports your swimming. Access to weights and equipment can help, but it isn’t essential!

There’s plenty you can do with limited space and equipment. The key is having a clear purpose and understanding how the exercises support your swimming.

Don’t let a lack of facilities, structured club sessions or coaching guidance stop you from adding S&C to your weekly programme.

Developing an effective backstroke requires the rotation and arm stroke to work together.

During Evie’s recent pool 1:1, we focused on improving the timing of her rotation. By coordinating it more closely with each arm stroke, Evie was able to create greater stroke length and generate more power through the pull.

A well-timed rotation can help make your backstroke feel smoother, stronger and more efficient.

If you would like help developing your swimming technique, visit the link in our bio to book a pool 1:1 or message me to discuss what you would like to work on.

Alternatively, join our mailing list via our website to receive updates about future sessions.
