Following the horrific events in Truro last week, the bank holiday has brought yet more violent crime to the region. Knives have become the weapon of choice — not occasionally, but almost daily.

Removing the blades is the easy part. Removing the intent behind them is the real problem, and it isn't solved by legislation or slogans.
No one is coming to save you. No threat waits politely for police to arrive before an assault begins. The responsibility to recognise danger and protect yourself and others starts with us — not with an institution three, five, ten minutes away.

We keep hearing calls for "better education and awareness," led by police, in schools and communities. But awareness of what, exactly? That knives are dangerous? That's not news to anyone carrying one. The people these programmes are aimed at have no respect for police authority and no fear of consequences — the message doesn't land where it needs to.

Those who do listen are rarely the problem in the first place.

What actually makes Maverick Combatives different?

We get asked this a lot, so here it is straight:
Krav Maga gives you fast, direct, effective physical responses — proven techniques built for real threats. It's the foundation, and it's why most people find us in the first place.

Urban Combatives is what we add on top.
Where Krav Maga focuses on the physical technique, Urban Combatives focuses on everything around it — awareness before a situation even starts, reading body language, de-escalation, decision-making under pressure, and understanding the environments people actually get caught out in (streets, car parks, public transport, nights out).

Training them together means you're not just learning "what to do if someone grabs me" — you're learning how to avoid being grabbed in the first place, and what to do if it still happens anyway. Prevention and response. That's the combination.

And right now, this combination isn't being taught anywhere else in the area.
I'm currently the only instructor teaching Urban Combatives alongside Krav Maga across Plymouth and Torbay — which means if you want reality-based training that covers the full picture (not just techniques in a controlled class setting), this is genuinely the only place locally to get it.

No egos, no competition rules, no experience required. Just useful, real-world skills — taught properly.

The Reality of Modern Violence:
Why the Truro Machete Attack is a Warning of What's to Come

The quiet streets of Cornwall were shattered on Monday afternoon, 24 August 2026. In broad daylight, a violent brawl involving bladed weapons erupted on Calenick Street in Truro city centre, leaving three men injured and two arrested by armed police. For many locals, the shocking video footage circulating on social media—showing a shirtless man brandishing a massive machete—felt completely detached from the Cornwall they know.

But it shouldn't. This incident is a stark wake-up call. It represents the reality of modern street violence, and unless drastic systemic changes occur, this threat is going to get worse.

The Illusion of "Safe Areas" has gone.
For years, rural and coastal regions like Cornwall have lived under a false sense of security, believing that severe weapon-related crime is strictly a "big city problem." The Truro attack proves that geographic isolation no longer provides immunity.

The dynamics of modern crime have shifted:

• The Spread of Knife Culture:
The normalisation of carrying bladed articles has bled out of major metropolitan hubs and into smaller towns and rural communities.

• Social Media Amplification:
Disagreements that used to end in fistfights are now fueled online, escalating rapidly until someone grabs a weapon to prove a point on camera.

• Access to Weapons:
Despite various legislative crackdowns, large combat knives and machetes remain terrifyingly easy to acquire and circulate within local networks.

Why It Is Going to Get Worse?
While Devon and Cornwall Police were quick to reassure the community that this was an isolated incident between people known to each other, it highlights a broader, compounding issue.

We are facing a perfect storm that guarantees an increase in these types of confrontations:

1. Stretched Emergency Resources: Police forces outside major cities face massive geographical areas with limited numbers of frontline officers, making rapid intervention more difficult.

2. Desensitisation: Continuous exposure to weapon violence on social media platforms lowers the barrier to entry for young people, making the carrying of a blade seem necessary for self-defence or status.

3. Escalation Tactics: When one group begins carrying weapons, rival factions or individuals feel compelled to carry even larger, more lethal blades to compensate, creating a dangerous arms race on our local streets.

A Stark Warning for the Community
The Truro machete attack cannot be brushed aside as an anomaly. It is a symptom of a modern threat that is actively expanding. When daylight brawls with machetes become part of the local news cycle in Cornwall, the trajectory is clear.

Communities must move past shock and demand targeted, proactive knife-crime initiatives, tougher local enforcement, and robust youth intervention before these terrifying displays become a daily occurrence. The warning signs are flashing right in front of us. It is time to pay attention.

You Don’t Need To Be A Fighter

Maybe martial arts have never really been your thing.

You’re not looking to compete.
You don’t want to become a cage fighter.
You’re not interested in spending years learning complicated techniques.

You simply want to feel a little safer.

Or maybe you’ve been thinking for a while:

“I really should learn how to protect myself.”

You don’t need experience.
You don’t need to be “tough.”

You just need to start.
