Cattewater Plymouth Gig Rowing Club

Cattewater Plymouth Gig Rowing Club Plymouth's original gig rowing club. The club has 2 wooden race boats - Drake and Catalina, as well as 2 plastic training boats - Mr & Mrs Floaty!

Named after the Cattewater, and based at the Mount Batten Watersports Centre, we offer competitive and social rowing in the stunning surroundings of Plymouth Sound. One of the fastest growing team sports in the UK - Cornish Pilot Gig Racing combines traditional handmade wooden rowing boats with a crew of 7, variable sea conditions and race courses combining tight turns to create an additive sport

that is accessible to all ages and abilities. Plymouth’s Cattewater Pilot Gig Club are based at the Mount Batten Watersports Centre in Plymstock and currently run 3 mens crews, 3 ladies crews, social rowing, learn-to-row sessions, as well as a junior crew. All our boats are a distinctive jade green colour and can often be seen rowing in Plymouth Sound all year round. During the summer months we compete at rowing Regattas through Devon, Cornwall and Dorset; and once a year we compete at the Gig Rowing World Championships on the Isles of Scilly. If you are looking for a new sport, a new challenge, looking to get fit, or just a sociable past-time on the water - drop us a line!

Our crew of 8 rowers + coxwain Lee are currently resting up in preparation for the Great River Race Official tomorrow 😬

21.6 miles of rowing along the Thames awaits them. If you can spare a few pennies in sponsorship, it will help the club to cover the cost of the recently purchased new gig β€˜Iris’ and her ongoing maintenance costs.

Newquay day 1 done βœ…

Quick summary; our 2 ladies crews both smashed day 1 and go through to tomorrow's quarter finals πŸ’ͺπŸ‘πŸŽ‰

Ladies A, despite having to wait until the last heat of round 1, made short work of their race and comfortably qualified for the quarter finals with a 2nd place finish 😎

Ladies B on the other hand were racing in the 1st heat of the day, but a 4th place finish meant they had to go again in round 2... No worries though as they cruised to a 1st place finish, and also go through to the quarter finals πŸŽ‰

Bring on tomorrow! πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺ

Eight of our crew are swapping Plymouth Cattewater for the London Thames next weekend to take part in the London River Marathon from Millwall to Richmond

With over 2500 competitors in 300 crews, the event includes various β€˜fixed seat’ craft from Thames Watermens Cutters, Cornish Pilot Gigs and the mighty Dragon Boats

The course is a gruelling 21.6 miles, under 28 bridges and will take around 3-4 hours

We are raising sponsorship money from the event to cover the cost of the recently purchased new gig β€˜Iris’ and her ongoing maintenance costs.

Any donations gratefully received!

Wooden boat weekend 😍

The current heatwave is great for rowing, but it's tough on our wooden race boats who prefer things a bit cooler.

Last weekend we launched all 3 to give them some time on the water and to allow for some 'friendly' club racing πŸ€”
