Yesterday wasn't our day at the office.
With Uni '3's delaying kick-off up to 40 minutes, our superb preparations were stiffled.
Uni took the lead after a matter of seconds, putting us on the backfoot from the off. The Blues battled to gain a footing, Kuur hitting the bar, Goucher forcing a superb save from the keeper having broken the defensive line in a 1v1. Before Uni doubled their lead on the 20th minute mark, countering at speed with a cross being converted. This kick started another spell of attacks from The Blues as Kuur picked the ball up after a corner, cutting inside unleashing a pile driver against the post. Not long after Payne forced a close range save also in a 1v1 situation.
Trailing at the interval, True Blues had the downhill advantage, peppering the Uni goalmouth, to no avail. Uni had 2 opportunities on the break during the half, taking both. Our combinations and willingness to win the ball back in high areas become more positive as the half progressed, in turn creating goalscoring opportunities, not taken.
Manager Macauley said in reaction to the game:
"This outcome will certainly not define our season. It's a long marathon, not a sprint. Whilst it would have been great to get off to a winning start to any campaign, our mistakes were costly. Throughout the second half there was ample opportunities to shorten the deficit, which were not pounced upon.
We regroup ahead of our run of home games coming up, looking to put the wrongs, right."
