Lovely large family group enjoying perfect conditions for wildlife watching. The four teenagers LOVED their single kayaks …. And their parents loved theirs too!

Our family sessions can be a taster session or a full session, and we gear them to families with children as young as 13 years old.

A stunning weather day … and perfect for learning to sea kayak. Low tide in the middle of the day gave us the opportunity to explore and admire the countless rocks, skerries and islands that make up Plockton’s archipelago.

Hebridean Explorer - Day 5

The beauty of North Uist is the countless sheltered options when the weather isn’t so favourable. We made the most of these and finished our trip paddling the length of Loch Euphort. We poked our noses out into the Minch … which was surprisingly benign given the forecast … and enjoyed the sheltered nooks and crannies of this beautiful sea loch.

A great finale for our inaugural Hebridean Explorer week. Well done to the strong team paddling with us, a big thank you to Ali Rose for great leadership and support, Moorcroft Holidays for the best campsite I’ve stayed at for a long time and CalMac Ferries for being on time and running smoothly.

Next year we have 2 trips to the Outer Hebrides to choose from. Our Outer Hebrides Seahorse Expedition with St Hilda Sea Adventures , and our Hebridean Explorer week which will be campsite based. Get in touch to register your interest.

Hebridean Explorer - Day 3

Otternish to Lochmaddy. A day of adventure.

Crucial to get the timings right to make the portage. And crucial to navigate the complicated network of channels to FIND the portage!

Interesting to see the tidal rapids, which emptied a lot later than we expected. Thanks to Matt Phillips for the local knowledge which was very much appreciated 👍

A lovely end to the day with crab cakes and tea at the Lochmaddy Hotel 🦀

Hebridean Explorer - Day 2

Our team were based at the amazing Moorcroft Holidays which meant we could paddle straight out the door. Brilliant.

Day 2’s weather leant towards a paddle from the Atlantic to the Minch, via the north Grimsay channel and under one of the many causeways that connect the southern Outer Hebrides island chain together. At North Ronaigh we circumnavigated Floddaigh Mòr where we experienced some spicy conditions in the Minch. By the time we reached the Vallastrome the strong tides had subsided, and we finished with for a leisurely exit at the busy fishing harbour of Ceallan.

Hebridean Explorer - Day 1

Our best weather day of the week … so we kicked off with a stunning paddle across the Sound of Harris. This is the stretch of water that separates the islands of Harris in the north from North Uist and Berneray in the south. It’s shallow and rocky and dotted with many islands and numerous reefs. A kayakers paradise.

I had never made the full crossing before, so it was a real treat to share it with our team of fabulous paddlers.

What a week our North Coast explorers had! A mixed weather forecast kept the team on their toes. However, the expert planning and leadership from Ali Rose resulted in an incredible week where our paddlers kayaked some of the best coastline Scotland’s north has to offer. 📸 onhistoesaliirose
