Day 54 of 53 😜 post trip admin after UK to the Balkans with !

First off the plane, I jumped off the bottom step of the Ryanair Boeing 737, both feet could touching UK soil again! A midnight flight is always a bit meh… but saying goodbye to Maja was easy as we both feel it’s the start of something! After squeezing Maja a temporary goodbye, seeing her reunited with her partner was the cutest thing.

We are going to apply to Race Across the World as it would be a brilliant way to try another challenge and we’d definitely struggle without phones or something for me to tinker with…!

I got back to my gaff at 0300 in the morning to an adorable welcome home banner and some bubbly with my husband, so happy to be in his arms again. And what a pleasure be back in my own bed after 53 nights.

Today has been admin, sorting kit out and noting what worked and what didn’t. I sat on my GasGas just because. Finally a top up of a bit more of Italian food, the car needed a drive so I visited one of its favourite shops 😁 Tomorrow, family party! 🎉

Time to chill in Verona, so our post Prosecco session wander through Verona led us to the Romeo & Juliet balcony, and some gift shopping for my special people at home. Did a bit of posing and feeling pretty next to some of Verona’s Old Town rustic bits.

There is no better way to enjoy Italy than eating excellent food, so we sniffed out another exceptional Resturant where the menu offered a pasta dish served ‘according to the chefs mood’! Today, he was cheerful, a fellow biker, so he served a moreish plate of handmade beef stew ravioli, roped with truffle and cacao nibs. We made sure to drink a couple of glasses of red to drown our sorrows at the realisation that this adventure is coming to a close.

We spent the afternoon on the terrace of the hotel doing a couple more videos and now we are at the airport, gradually letting our minds think about the real world. It’s not quite going to be the same.

We were reflecting on highlights of the trip, some we shared and some we had different perspectives on. It’s been really special to hear that Maja thought that our deeper friendship was a highlight to her. This means so much more to me than any mountain we climbed.

We watched sunrise from the ferry into Venice and met two Austrian dudes who had spent a massive 60 days together further east than we have, as far as Russia and back. Fair play and lots of cold weather luggage! We knew they were still loving life, as Maja and I are, as their SENA intercom was set on channel 1, which meant I could give them my best Google translated German and send them best wishes.

Maja had the inspiration for another vineyard, so we headed for the Prosecco hills for a video moment and to wet our appetites for celebratory bubbles after handing our happy little CRFs over to the Honda logistics team in Verona. Not before cleaning them of course! Goodbye my little Bym Bym, you’ve done me proud, see you in the UK!

Another excellent hotel choice, we are safely in Verona central and popped out for a decent Italian celebration. A bottle of Prosecco down with a delicious meal. What a way to end an exceptional trip with an exceptional woman.

With a couple of hours sleep and alarms set for 0100, we arrived at the Igoumeitsa ferry terminal in good time to check in and get back to bed. It was about 0530 till we got to sleep, and I’ve managed to spend almost the whole day in my cabin, less a few mins outside for some melatonin top up! However I could have clearly brought a hammock…

Reflecting on my relationship with Maja, we have become a little symbiotic; achieving a natural sense of what the other one needs or feels, it’s really cool. We have the same lust for adventure and clearly the same taste in wine, food and hotels helps too! When Maja proposes the next location I can see a glint in her eye, inside I’ve already said yes 😆 Spa anyone?

We will be doing a full kit review, especially a nod to our mountain goat CRF Rallys and the robustness of the Kriega & Knox kit - very happy. Some brands need a bit more support as they should be mainstream accessories, so a big shout out to the team too. They offer a heel support adaptation to the single footpeg. Once fitted, you can stand and really grip the tank through your whole boot, allowing you greater contact and feel with the bike, or just help take the weight off your butt.

I’ve also benefited from the pegs after crashing, I twisted my ankle on this trip and having a full heel and toe platform to rest my foot against was really helpful. They also retract out of the way just like the pegs do, so no digging in!

The Euro Hotel in Ksamil was exactly what we needed, on the quieter side of beach life, incredibly welcoming reception chap, Fabio, who couldn’t have done any more to help us. Oh and immaculate pool, clean spacious and quiet rooms, well prepared food. Our love of Albania returns!

To enjoy Ksamil, we went snorkelling around the coast and spotted, along with the fishies, a floating Ferrari you could hire. It had its own motor too! With a solid lunch back at the chilled pool, we headed to the Greek border; but not before we rode under a wild fire (not a quad bike this time!) and got on a chain ferry.

With a brief dash off-road, we also avoided a kamikaze goat and sheep. Livestock on the road is to be expected but even riding slowly can scare them!

Safely over the border, we enjoyed a chilled ride along the Greek coast and arrived at a hotel near the port. I asked the receptionist for a good sunset spot, which was a 9 mins climb behind the hotel. What a view as the sun descended behind the islands. A local photographer was kind enough to take some shots of us too. Another happy day on a motorcycle!

As the trip draws to a close, I’m enjoying a few things…
The simple pleasure of taking your boots off. Or having a washing machine… or running water for that matter. Meeting Sabo was also a big turning point for understanding the value of things.

I’m grateful for my body taking me this far too.

We left the hotel in a hurry, the mosquitos were eating us for breakfast! Heading south, we just rode 220km straight over 3.5 hours and focussed on staying safe. Maja had booked a modern hotel with a pool next to a beach in Ksamil, we both focused on getting there asap, including holding our bladders 😋

Scariest bit for me was a wild horse that bolted across the road, and then looked like it was going return across my path. Oh my heart, never felt it beat like that! Apart from the feels for Ben, obvs 😜 Maja narrowly avoided a car doing a surprise left… but thankfully we both expect chaos.

We arrived at the hotel, checked in and chilled. I popped to the beach to see some fishies. Last big day of riding done! We enjoyed another delicious meal and good chats, always happy with a glass of red in our hands. Time to unwind.

One person suggested that I should find a way to just stay on the road, and I can see the nomadic appeal. However this trip has made me realise just how much I love those who love me; how much they mean to me and how much I want to be with them.

I feel a bit different about my ‘stuff’ too, as I can clearly live out of a few bags on a bike.

Our first tricky campsite experience. The promise of vineyards on Google but on arrival, strips of dead rotting rabbit all over the grass, fantastic. Stray dogs begging for food. An initially helpful, but then over friendly campsite manager with home brew red wine and stinky feet cheese. No, I don’t want a massage and I’ve said no three times. We couldn’t wait to get out of there.

Albania has been chaos. Lots of UK plates on cars, I wonder how they got here… There was a stray dog that was walking dazed in the middle of the dual carriageway, looking at the state it was in… heart breaking.

We’ve decided to chin off chasing the TET miles and head to Greece earlier than planned. We’ve conquered our mountains and now we need a holiday from our ‘holiday’, both of us are mentally / physically done. We opted for motorway chaos to get out of rural Albania and find tourist heavier areas.

For some extra fun, my tire picked up a huge nail and I enjoyed a decent puncture wobble to a local garage / scrap yard. Within an hour and some teamwork we were back on the road, getting tyres on rims takes a little patience over strength, and lots of fairy liquid! I’m glad I practiced changing tyres before we left, it would have been horrible to learn today in near 30 degree heat. Never go past 12 o’clock! Thanks Noel 😍

Back on the road, a kamikaze hot hatch almost caused a pile up and should you hang around in the ‘fast’ lane for too long, you get a Mercedes up your exhaust pipe, flashing its lights. Pretty sure you’d get nudged if you didn’t move.

To feel better we found a solid hotel in Divjaka-Karavasta National Park with an excellent Resturant. We shared a bottle of good red to celebrate surviving and I ate a salt baked sea bass and two desserts.

It’s a goggle day! This means sunshine and visors back off. We left our ‘castle’ and headed to the Albanian Alps. Initially it was a tight and busy tarmac road for the climb and descent. It’s messy, cars/bikes/vans everywhere, lots of fly tipping and the driving, well you need your wits about you.

Offroad however, much more peaceful and more bikers to wave at. We followed the River Lumi i Shalës and it kept getting more inviting till we could resist no more! With a wiggle to find a parking spot, we enjoyed crystal clear alpine water swim, chillingly refreshing and invigorating.

With the tarp set up between the bikes for shade, we enjoyed the generous lunch that the hotel had given us as post swim feast. We stared at butterflies and dragon flies for entertainment and gorged on cheese, sausage, egg and croissants, with jam, yum!

The afternoon had one more trick up its sleeve, an easy TET climb up another mountain until we arrived at the start of a rock slide! We came round a corner to see a car stopped and boulders rolling down. We had 2 choices… wait till the road was blocked completely, or just go for it. We paused till some noise had settled and then rode as fast as we could under it. Lucky as the slide fully blocked the road about 30 mins later.

That’s enough adventure for one day! Happy camping night… just random dead rabbits, stray dogs and an owner who keeps offering a massage. Early exit me thinks!
