In my opinion these are the four main reasons to work on your mobility as a cyclist.
1. Greater hip, ankle and thoracic mobility allows a smoother, more powerful and more aerodynamic pedal stroke

It reduces energy leaks from stiffness or poor joint alignment, meaning more of your effort translates directly into forward motion
2. By improving your posture through simple mobility exercises you will counteract cycling caused muscle imbalance
3. Mobility around the joints often improves with muscle balance which is a key factor in decreasing injury risk
4. Cycling is repetitive and linear. Mobility work restores movement variety, ensuring joints move through their full natural ranges. This maintains healthy tissue elasticity and joint health over time, letting you ride pain-free for years rather than just seasons

Michael Guilford specialises in coaching gravity focused mountain bikers, preparing them for Downhill & Enduro races.

Many mountain bikers head straight for steep, technical trails—only to find their cornering confidence and speed don’t improve. One of the biggest reasons is skipping the basics.

If you want to ride steep corners smoothly and with control, you need to know when to release the brakes, let the bike roll, and trust your technique. The secret? Start small, build your skills in a safe environment, and then progress to harder trails.

In this guide, Michael shares a simple cornering progression he uses with downhill & enduro riders to help them gain speed, control, and confidence when descending.
