Autumn Dump 🍁

Life has been absolutely wild the last couple of months…👇

Turning the gym around with the help of has been one of the hardest and yet one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.

Trust me there’s been a lot of sleepless nights.😅

A lot of missed training sessions and crappy nutrition.

Certainly some body fat gained and some muscle mass lost.👎

BUT

The strength and resolve you find in these situations is like nothing money can buy.⚔️

This quote has helped me a lot throughout this process so I wanted to share it with you:

“Your attitude is the blade which cuts circumstance.” - Robert Greene

When you’re going through it, everything sits on a knife’s edge. 🔪

Which side of the knife you land on is up to you.

You can let fear crush you OR you can let it energise you.

You can realise that this is another opportunity to prove your mettle.

I’m excited of this next chapter folks.

Thanks for following along 😉👊

Team. I did a tough thing…

This past 6 weeks have been some of the hardest of my life. 😔

I’ve been doubted. Screamed at. Had my reputation dragged through the mud.

Luckily I’ve spent the last 5 years in the mental-lab getting “deep end certified” as David Goggins puts it.

So between me and you in a situation like this there’s a kinda perverse part of me that relish’s the opportunity to prove my mettle once again…

Because I know it’s an opportunity I’ve been given to grow and to comeback stronger.

So what happened? 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s the typical story of a business (my gym) that grew so fast that the very business model that caused it to be such a success began to cause it to collapse.

Behind the scenes we were let down. People we had paid to protect us hadn’t done their jobs properly.

Ultimately I was faced with a decision.

Shut the thing down OR fight for it.

In so many ways it would been easier to just close it. Blame it on the economy.

But that’s not me.

Life has taught me that In many ways these set backs are just gifts in disguise.

To discover new parts of ourselves.

New levels of courage and determination that have laid dormant, that we didn’t know existed.

If you’re going through it right now.

If you’re in that mental lab.

Remember that your attitude is the blade which cuts circumstance.

How you mentally approach your obstacles is the greatest determinant of whether they will affect your life positively or negatively.

I have tattooed on my right arm the quote from the philosopher king Marcus Aurelius “The obstacle is the way”.

What it means to me is that life’s greatest challenges are not a distraction from the path to success…

They are the path to success.

F*ck the doubters.

F*ck the haters.

Use them as fuel to your fire. 🔥

Prove them all wrong.

When you learn the alchemy of turning life’s greatest obstacles into its most valuable opportunities.

Well f*ck…

You just became UNSTOPPABLE. ⚔️

Excited to be back team 😉

Hey there! 👋

Over the last 5 years I BECAME my own client avatar… 😬

Let me explain. 👇

My first 7 years as a Personal Trainer I worked with tonnes of burnt out busy professionals and exhausted mums and dads, desperately trying to maintain some level of fitness around their hectic schedules (my client avatar).

Now whilst I tried to imagine what it was like to be in their shoes…🤷🏻‍♂️

As a time-free 22 year old I really had no idea.😅

BUT over the last 5 years not only do I now understand what my clients are going through.

I LITERALLY became one of them.🫠

Going from corporate gym PT to full-time studio owner, husband and father pulling 70hr work weeks and suffering through yet another “sleep regression”.

Trust me when I say I feel your pain.😩

I have felt that pull to rest on my laurels - after all I’m a Dad and a business owner, who’s going to judge me if I let myself go a bit?🤷🏻‍♂️

BUT I REFUSE TO BE THAT GUY ⚔️

I refuse to be that coach that talks about “back in the good ol’ days”.👎

I implore you to stand in the face of adult life in UTTER DEFIANCE of the “dad bod” that has become so acceptable in our culture.⚔️

✅ YES you will need to update your training split from the 7-day bro split that worked when you were 19.

✅ YES you will need to become adaptable, to change your plan on a moments notice because you were up with the baby and had 4hrs sleep.

✅ YES you will need to develop nutrition strategies that allow you to keep making progress even when you’ve had no time.

Be that ROLE MODEL for your children.🙌

And learn how to train with kettlebells so you can train, anytime, anywhere.😉

You GOT THIS. 👊

It’s not just okay to take breaks - it’s vitally important that you do. ✋

AND you’ll get better results because of it!

Let me explain… 👇

One of the most common trends I spot when I’m talking to a beginner vs a more advanced trainee is the beginner always quotes training extremely HARD. 🤔

1-2 hrs a session and 5-7 days per week is common BUT they always have huge gaps in their training history. 🤷🏻‍♂️

They set big goals… run that half marathon.

Complete a Hyrox

Hit that PB.

Then they just STOP. 👎

It’s 6 months training like Rocky and 6 months in bed exhausted and injured.🫠

They don’t stop training because they want to.

But because they have to.

The first step to becoming a more advanced athlete is understanding that this thing takes time - it’s a marathon and not a sprint. 💡

You need breaks to help you recover, reflect and get better.

If the most successful athletes in the world can take regularly planned down time… you can too.😉

So stop feeling guilty if you’re not hammering it 24/7.

Great training is like a kettlebell swing.

It needs both tension and relaxation.

That’s where the magic happens. ✨✨✨

Last weekend I got out of my comfort zone and took on the StrongFirst Kettlebell Level 2 Instructor Challenge and passed 12 out of 13 tests (luckily I have 6 months to complete the final test!). 🥳

Over the course of the weekend I kept mentally coming back to a book I recently read - “The Comfort Crisis” by Michael Easter.🤔

In Michael’s book he deep dives into how we live in perhaps the most comfortable, temperature controlled, over-fed and under-challenged time there has ever been for our species on planet earth.👎

That in-fact whilst most ancient civilisations thought our doom would occur via some natural disaster or wrathful god, instead - we might just pleasure ourselves into oblivion instead.🫠

SO I kept coming back to how bonkers it was that in this - “the comfort crisis”, there were a bunch of people in a warehouse in Yorkshire, having had paid their hard earned money, given up their weekend and trained for months - for something that was massively, undeniably - uncomfortable.😳

What is that?🤔

What is it within human nature that these individuals were seeking?

Greatness? ⚡️

Self-actualisation?🔥

To become a better version of themselves? 💥

To my mind it’s probably some combination of all of the above. 👆

I know for me, my life’s greatest challenges have turned out to be life’s greatest gifts and forged me into the person I am today. 🎁

I know that destiny constantly whispers in my ear that I still have work left to do, there’s more of me left to uncover and greater heights to reach.

I know that I am not alone in this.

During the comfort crisis there are many of us pushing back.👊

There is a better version of you waiting…

They’re just outside of your comfort zone.

SO my question to you is….👇

Are you going to pleasure yourself to death? 🤔

OR embrace the uncomfortable and become the person you were born to be?⚔️

I have never told this story publicly before but 12 months later I feel like I’m finally ready to share what I went through. 👇

Not for me but because I know someone out there going through a set back just like this and needs to hear this story…

12 months ago I ripped my Pec Major clean off the bone in a one-rep-max accident on the bench press.🩸

As I felt the fibres tear across my chest like broken guitar strings I knew I had done something pretty serious…

What caused the accident to happen that day? 🤔

Was it the previous rotator cuff injury on my left shoulder mitigating too much stress to the opposing side?

Was it the lack of recovery with a 6 month year old that wouldn’t sleep?😴

I’m not sure.

But what I did know was that I was facing down a lifetime watching as my pec major slowly disintegrated to nothing.

This was truly a dark, dark moment.

I wasn’t able to drive, to work, I couldn’t lift my right arm at all. But the worst bit was not being able to hold my son - that bit really hurt. 🥺

Not too mention the full identity crisis of who was I going to be now? I can’t be a fitness guy without a chest!

As I went down for surgery to reattach the muscle I swore that if the surgery was a success I was going to stop holding anything back in my life, no more excuses - it was time to be nothing less than my best self, all day, everyday 24/7.

Surgery was a success. ☺️

I spent the next 6 months rehabbing my shoulder and rebuilding my body. 💪

But the drive I found in that dark time spilled over into every area of my life.💡

I tripled the size of my business 🤯

Doubled the size of my team.

Built this account from 0-32k in less than 5 months.

AND rebuilt my body back just as - if not stronger than where I was before the injury 💪

I’m not telling you this because I’m special.

Quite the opposite.

I’m telling you this because I want to remind you that in our darkest of moments, in the obstacles we face, is a gift.

It’s only in overcoming our greatest challenges we find the inner strength to become our very best selves and the determination to realise our full potential.
