Attention to detail matters.

Pilates isn’t about simply following the person at the front of the room.
It’s about learning how your body moves. Small adjustments in position, control, breathing and muscle recruitment can completely change an exercise.

That’s why I always say: trust your Pilates teacher.

Sometimes I’ll make an exercise smaller. Sometimes slower. I might change your position, give you a different variation, or ask you to repeat something that looks incredibly simple.
There is always a reason.

After 17 years of teaching/coaching I still believe the real value of Pilates is in the details — watching, correcting, adapting and helping each person understand their own movement a little better.

Good Pilates isn’t just a collection of exercises. It’s good teaching.

The Magic Circle really can be the most devious little piece of Pilates equipment. 😈

So simple. So small. And somehow it makes everything that little bit harder.

But beyond its classical use, it’s incredibly versatile. It can add challenge and feedback to balance work, naturally bring the upper body into an exercise, and even help modify some of the rolling exercises that can be tricky when you’re first learning them.

A little piece of equipment with a lot to offer.
Love it. 🤍

Maz Pilates is 10 years old. 💚

From Bridge of Earn to Forgandenny, Dunning, Aberuthven, Bankfoot, Letham, Cupar and Dairsie, and all the villages where I’ve worked to grow Maz Pilates, community has always been at the heart of it.

I’ve had the honour of working with hundreds of people over the past decade. The challenges you’ve brought to class have inspired me to keep learning: studying psychology to better understand chronic pain, taking on APPI training to deepen my work with back and shoulder problems, and Level 4 strength and conditioning to support athletic performance.

I didn’t arrive here by chance. The desire to help people feel better is what drives me every day, and I’m grateful to everyone who has been part of these ten years.

To my regular clients, especially those who have been showing up for years: thank you for your trust, your encouragement and the community you’ve helped create. Here’s to many more classes together. 💚

Happy birthday to Us All ❤️❤️❤️

Simple moves. Precision. Big effect.

Pilates doesn’t need complicated movements to be challenging.

Often, the simplest exercise, performed with control, precision and intention, can be incredibly effective.

One of the mechanisms we use in movement is called reciprocal inhibition.
When one muscle contracts, your nervous system can reduce the activity of the opposing, or antagonist, muscle, allowing it to relax and lengthen more easily.

Pilates also uses plenty of isometric muscle work, where a muscle creates tension without a large visible movement, alongside controlled shortening and lengthening of the muscles.

This combination of strength, control, mobility and precise muscle activation is one reason people often finish a Pilates class feeling taller, more open and as though they’ve had a really good stretch — even when we’ve done surprisingly little traditional stretching.

That’s the beauty of Pilates. We’re not simply trying to stretch further or make movements bigger. We’re teaching the body to move efficiently, with opposing muscle groups working together rather than fighting each other.

Simple doesn’t mean easy. Precision changes everything.

PILATES IS NOT ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS. 🌿

Somewhere along the way, exercise became so focused on burning calories, losing weight and changing how our bodies look that we forgot what movement is really about.

Pilates was never designed to be a weight-loss programme.

The fundamentals of Pilates are about:
✨ Breathing – connecting breath with movement.
✨ Control – moving with intention rather than momentum.
✨ Concentration – bringing your mind into every movement.
✨ Centring – developing strength and stability from within.
✨ Precision – focusing on the quality of movement, not the number of repetitions.
✨ Flow – creating smooth, coordinated and purposeful movement.

Pilates teaches us to understand our bodies, improve our posture, develop strength, increase mobility and move with greater confidence.
It is about being able to bend, reach, lift, walk, play and enjoy life with a body that supports us.
You do not need to change the way your body looks to benefit from Pilates.

You simply need to experience what your body is capable of.

And that, for me, is what Pilates has always been about. 💚
