1st XI
The 1st XI went into the final weekend of the season knowing a win against Dundee High School Former Pupils could be enough to secure the SPCU North East Championship, should Aberdeenshire slip up at home to Crescent.
Having lost the toss, PDCC were asked to bat first, but quickly found themselves in trouble, losing their top four for just 34 runs and leaving the middle and lower order with plenty of work to do. However, PDCC showed great maturity to dig themselves out of the hole they found themselves in. Having been out injured for much of the season, Fawad was reintroduced to the 1st XI middle order and showed his class with the bat. Coming to the crease at 34-4 in the 8th over, Fawad remained at the crease until the bitter end, finishing unbeaten on 66 to help PDCC post a competitive 182. He was well supported throughout, particularly by youngster Sam Dodd, who made a defiant 23 towards the end of the innings.
PDCC’s defence started well, as has so often been the case this season. Rory struck early and would go on to take 4-24, ending the season with an impressive 33 wickets at an average of just 14. Despite having Dundee High at 39-5, PDCC took their foot off the gas, which in a must-win situation can be extremely dangerous. DHSFP would put on a 97-run partnership for the sixth wicket before Franco took his season wicket tally to 41, removing the dangerous Parthenis for 74. The game would go right down to the final over, but an excellent final over from youngster Aaban left the result in no doubt, with PDCC securing a thrilling four-run victory.
Unfortunately, this wouldn’t be enough to take home the league title, as Aberdeenshire would defeat Crescent at Mannofield, meaning PDCC finish the season in second place. Our congratulations go to Aberdeenshire Cricket Club. After an exciting season full of twists and turns, they came out deserved winners, and we wish them all the best in their long-overdue return to the EPL.
2nd XI
The 2nd XI travelled to Glendelvine to take on Tay Lions. Despite Tay Lions getting off to a good start with an opening partnership of 55, the BBIB, Ivor Patterson, used his lethal mix of experience and skill to rein the opposition in, with his five-wicket haul helping reduce them to 99-7. However, the opposition managed to get away from PDCC, putting on 106 for their final three wickets to finish on 205.
The chase was never fully comfortable for PDCC, who lost wickets at regular intervals. Despite some late resistance from the lower order, PDCC were eventually bowled out for 144.
The 2nd XI currently sit 7th with two fixtures remaining, although today’s fixture against Master Blasters fell foul of the rain.
3rd XI
Despite defeat to bottom-of-the-table Stoneywood Dyce, the 3rd XI secured their safety in Division 2 thanks to picking up a healthy number of bonus points.
Early dropped catches would come back to haunt PDCC, as Stoneywood got off to a solid start. However, regular wickets throughout the middle and later stages of the innings helped restrict the opposition to 193 from their 40 overs.
In the chase, PDCC’s main target was to reach 125 in order to pick up the bonus points required for safety. They achieved this fairly comfortably, with club stalwart Fergie reaching his half-century, well supported by Tawhid. PDCC would take the chase to the final over thanks to some good lower-order batting from Owais and Hugh. However, when the final wicket fell, they found themselves just four runs short.
The 3rd XI finish the season in 6th and can hold their heads high. It was a tough season at times in what was a strong division, but to survive while giving so many talented youngsters plenty of time in the middle is something to be very proud of.
