COUPLE

Hounds are counted in couples, a singular hound 🐶 is referred to a half couple, and two hounds 🐶 🐶 make a couple.

It is the Whipper-in’s duty to ensure that all hounds are counted for. The Whipper-in will inform the huntsman on the number of their hounds before moving on from a covert.

If all hounds are counted for then the Whipper-in will state “all on”.

In the instance that the pack is light of a few hounds. E.g. 1.5 couple (= 3 hounds), it is the Whipper-in’s duty to call / collect any stray hounds 🐶 🐶 they will ensures that there are no hounds left behind before moving on.
