There was an angry sea at Kynance on Saturday evening. I’m always amazed how more people don’t get in trouble or worse in the sea here. It’s amazing how you can have a beach that draws so many people to it and have no lifeguard cover.
A few pointers, typically with flat calm conditions, there isn’t too much to worry about…if you stay on the main drag and stay fairly shallow.
With an outgoing tide, particularly a spring and within the middle hours of an outgoing tide, you can get a current pulling around Asparagus island, in a clockwise direction. This is particularly true in slightly deeper water.
Best swimming at low tide, with an incoming tide. Any swell or chop bounces off the rocks and cliffs towards high tide and it tends to get choppier. Access into and out of the water is also more difficult.
The beach on the north side of Kynance, accessible towards low tide, gets cut off towards high tide…so keep an eye on it.
If you are venturing out for a longer swim, don’t go by yourself. It’s a fairly remote beach, with large rock features…easy to lose sight of people.
