Pure Grappling

Pure Grappling Pure Grappling is a Brazillian Jiujitsu team coached by black belt Kevin Derrington. Sessions are held in Penzance and Helston. Contact for class details.

Affiliated to Flo Martial Arts in Plymouth under second degree black belt Kenny Baker. Our team competes in BJJ, MMA and no gi grappling. Our main focus is no gi, although we're happy to roll in a gi if visitors wish to do so. We encourage a relaxed and friendly training environment. We focus on a conceptual approach to learning. The '3 Ps' - Posture, Pressure and Possibilities allow a broad under

standing of the sport and enable us to all develop our own games and way of moving. We train at Mounts Bay Academy on Mondays and Wednesdays, Helston on Tuesdays and Sundays and at Koncept MMA Gym in Newquay on Thursdays and Sundays. We're affiliated to Flo Martial Arts under Kenny Baker in Plymouth, where they have classes 7 days a week in an amazing gym. We also hold regular small open mats in Penzance, Hayle and Helston, so we can put you in contact with one of the organisers if you’re visiting and want a roll outside of class times.

If you're ever in Plymouth (the wrong side of the bridge of course), then you should absolutely check out this gym. I've known them for years, and if I didn't live 80 miles away I'd definitely pop my head in more often!

Basics = high percentage and reliable.

At the last comp I went to I saw "one" buggy choke (that didn't work), and a whole load of people getting stuck in half guard, closed guard and unable to escape from bottom positions. The submissions were mostly very 'basic'.

Falmouth 7:30-9:30pm later if anyone fancies gleaning some knowledge from Matthew. I'll be back on Wednesday. CK

Since my work situation changed I haven't been to a comp in ages, but I figured for this one it would be worth making an effort. Turns out I was right! We hired (and filled) a minibus with grapplers and supporters and travelled to Plymouth for SW3. The latest installment of the ever growing South West Open BJJ Comp. The comp ran really smoothly, the reffing was great and I was really happy with the team that we took. PG took home 5 golds, 5 silvers and not a single bronze. Coach Jordan also managed to bag himself the £300 prize from the nogi absolute division which was pretty cool to watch. Overall it was a great experience, medals won and more importantly loads of feedback and video to study to take back to future classes so we can do even better in the next one. Tom Hopkins was bumped to a clearly deserved blue after clearing both his gi and nogi categories and also doing remarkably well against far more experienced competitors in the open!

The whole vibe for this was really positive. That's just the way we roll!

See you on the mats

I've known these great people for a lot of years, and it's always a pleasure to share a mat with them. Thank you Kenny Baker for making the long trip from overseas to come and share some of your wisdom with us. Solid fundamentally sound Jiujitsu. That's what you want from a seminar really. Nothing gimicky, and everything works and is tested there an then. Passer vs Sweeper is one of my favourite ways to play jiujitsu so that went down especially well with me!
Everyone rolled well, the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. Just another day in the office for PG really with welcome comrades from Plymouth over to add to the experience.
If you're in Plymouth and looking for somewhere to train then don't hesitate to drop into https://mmaplymouth.co.uk you won't be disappointed!
Looking forward to the next one already!

Here are our Christmas opening times, although looking at this I may or may not make New Years Day as it feels like a long time away yet, and I'll probably have some Christmas calories to shift by that point!

Happy Christmas!

Well, I’d call that a great finish to another good year and annual grading with the ever expanding PG community!
Matthew Remfrey is our newest Black Belt! - He’s an awesome guy who has been with me for years, a great coach who has done loads for the club including being entirely responsible for the expansion into Falmouth which has turned out to be a roaring success! (As Nate Diaz would say “I’m not surprised…” )
Jordan Richard and Will Murray who are both clearly incredibly good at what they do are pushed up to Brown.
Ben B, Carlo and Luke move to purple. Each having proven that with their own unique games that they are able to put onto people if they decide they want to. Most recently, Luke has been asserting his dominance in competition recently which has been great to see!
Personally I’m always really pleased to see people get to Blue. It’s a tough journey and shows a real understanding of grit, stubbornness and technical proficiency. It was my ‘favourite’ belt. The competition opportunities open up a lot more with higher level more tactical matches that are still good fun. Often in sports the higher the level, the more boring the matches can be as people understand how to game the system to get a win. Blue is the sweet spot where people are actually playing Jits, but still making just enough mistakes that matches can flip 180 at any moment. Plus there are usually a decent amount of competitors still! You’ve got to be a very special type of obsessive weirdo to stick it out to purple and beyond! Liam, Alice, Nat and Ben Lender. Time to hone your skills and find your speciality.
The club’s gone from strength to strength, and is far bigger than I’d ever planned on getting. Personally I’d be happy with a small handful of regulars, but it seems that the other coaches have bigger ideas! Onwards to 2026!
