The first of the four main generating units was synchroniz
ed to the National Grid in 1969, and the station was officially opened in June 1973 by the then Prime Minister Rt Hon Edward Heath. In November 1969 a meeting of CEGB staff proposed the forming of a sports & social club for all employees and their families, and the first club officers and committee were elected. At the 1978 AGM the management committee was given the go ahead to acquire suitable club premises away from the station site. Then in 1981 the CEGB on behalf of the club negotiated a lease on property to the rear and above the South Wales Electricity Board showroom at 45-47 Main Street Pembroke. Club members gave up many hours of their time to adapt ground floor building; the new club was opened on the 4th November 1982. The room above the showroom was the club lounge. An extension was added to the ground floor in 1988 to relocate the snooker and pool tables and to allow the construction by station staff for the only full sized skittle ally in the area. The CEGB by this time had been privatized and the power station was now owned and operated by National Power plc. Following the withdrawal of plans to convert the power station to burn orimultion the future of the station became very uncertain. National Power made it clear that they intended to withdraw all support for the club when the station closed on the 30th June 1997. An Extraordinary General Meeting was held and the decision was taken to form a limited company to run the club in its present form. On the 15th January 1998 Pembroke Power Station Sports & Social Club Limited was incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee, the four club officers became the company directors, and the club members became ordinary company members. Following months of negotiations funds were raised and in 2001 the freehold of the entire premises was purchased by the company, the front ground floor of the property is currently leased to FBM estate agents. During 2007-2008 the cellar was extended and upgraded, and a further extension was added which includes full disabled toilet facilities, and an additional self contained seating area. The club has held to it's original purpose of being a family club and continues to maintain a careful watch on behaviour within the club to that end.
