πŸ¦… Curlew antics at Run Nidderdale 2026 πŸ˜„β›°οΈ

As well as entertaining runners and supporters around the course, local runner Matt Trevelyan was also helping raise awareness of and funds for curlew conservation β€” something very close to the hearts of many people in Nidderdale.

Matt has previously completed an number of iconic challenges including the Yorkshire Three Peaks dressed as β€˜Cathy the curlew’ to help raise awareness of the challenges facing these iconic birds….but we think Run Nidderdale in a heat wave might have been his biggest challenge yet! πŸ˜…

We know the giant curlew caused plenty of smiles on race day, but the real curlews that nest on our moors are sadly under serious threat, with numbers declining significantly across the UK.

If you’d like to support the conservation work being carried out to help protect them, Matt is aiming to raise Β£10,000 β€” the equivalent of Β£1 for each of the 10,000 extra curlew chicks needed every year just to maintain a stable UK population. The UK is home to around a quarter of the world’s breeding Eurasian Curlews, yet their numbers have more than halved in the past 25 years due to a combination of habitat loss, changing land use, climate pressures, and predation. Every donation helps raise awareness of one of the UK’s most urgent conservation challenges πŸ‘‡

Huge thanks again to everyone who embraced the curlew chaos over the weekend, and of course to Matt for doing what he does! πŸ˜„πŸ¦…

Run Nidderdale 2026 β˜€οΈβ›°οΈπŸ¦…

A few moments from a very special day in Nidderdale β€” sunshine, steep climbs, fast racing, giant curlews and an incredible atmosphere from start to finish πŸ˜„

Featuring:
πŸ”₯ an epic battle at the front of the race between local fell running legend Tom Bell and young Ilkley Harriers challenger Edward Hobbs

πŸ¦… some hilarious curlew antics

πŸ•πŸ’¨ plus we may finally get an answer to the important question of who’s faster in a sprint finish β€” Ted or a border collie! πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Huge thanks again to every runner, volunteer, marshal, supporter and sponsor and culew who helped make this year’s event so memorable!

If you’ve been entertained and impressed by the antics of Matt, our intrepid culew, please consider donating to their fundraising page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/matthew-trevelyan-2?utm_medium=FA&utm_source=WA

It takes a small army of volunteers (and apparently several ducks) to put on a trail race πŸ˜„

A few behind-the-scenes moments from Run Nidderdale 2026 β€” from course marking and marquee building, to finish line testing, physio support, commentary, trail safety checks and some very important motivational ducks in the woods πŸ¦†

Huge thanks to everyone who gave up their time before, during and after the race to make the day happen. Events like this genuinely wouldn’t exist without volunteers.

We know runners mostly see the race itself β€” but these photos show some of the work, care, problem-solving and occasional chaos that goes on behind the scenes to create the event ❀️

And yes… we really did test the finish line.
And yes… the ducks absolutely were essential race infrastructure. πŸ˜‚

(Thanks to Andy Binns at Dacre Village Stores for the loan of the Ducks! πŸ¦† - more duck news coming soon!)

Behind every runner is a brilliant team of volunteers πŸ’š

Huge thanks to everyone who helped make Run Nidderdale happen yesterday β€” from marshals and medics and registration, to water stations, medals and cake!

And yes… the shortbread medals seemed to go down very well πŸ˜„ Huge credit to Becca, who baked every single one herself, and to Mel who personally welcomed every single runner over the line! πŸ’š

The homemade cakes also proved very popular with runners, supporters and volunteers alike β˜€οΈπŸ°

(I can confirm the medals tasted as good as they looked, having eaten 3… purely in the interests of quality control πŸ˜„πŸͺ)
