We massively place value on being strong within the gym that it goes beyond just for jiu jitsu.
It’s an indicator of health and longevity, it literally makes harder things feel easier, and builds a strong physique that can also improve mental health.
When it comes to sport, and in particular jiu jitsu, which isn’t just gross motor skills and maximum potential; using strength and explosive power excessively usually sign posts 2 things.
1) your skill level: if you’re reaching beyond blues in to purple and still spamming all out strength, then you’re covering for lack of skill.
2) you ego sucks: same as above but removing the disparity between strength and skill… then you just don’t want to lose or for benefit of the doubt, anxious, maybe about making a mistake.
Either way it still shows a lack of composure, skillset, and creates situations where injury is likely to occur.
Take away point? Not every round is a war or has to be… you’ll probably find out soon nobody will want to roll with you (unfortunately not because you’re too good, but you’re a high risk round).
Thoughts?
