Getting your head back in the game!

I feel like I’ve been stuck in a loop over the past few months, I start a good training block and then injury, social occasions and “life” just get in the way. Just me?

It’s a interesting one because when I’m up there training and racing at my best I’m mentally strong and go at it 100%, as soon as I see hurdles in the way the motivation drops off and I find it so hard to get back into it. By the looks of social media I’m not the only one in this vicious cycle in 2022!?

I’m no expert but here are some things I’ve been trying to help get myself back on track.

- Learn to say no and set boundaries with your social diary
- Breathe, take a moment to stop, take a breath and re-centre
- Don’t set yourself up for failure, set realistic goals
- Move, even if training isn’t going to happen today, get out there and move, a walk is sometimes enough to get those endorphins going

Above all I like to remind myself that this isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon, just because this month or year isn’t mine for the taking doesn’t mean that the next can’t be.

I hope you have found your groove this year and if you’re like me and haven’t quite found it yet I’m sure it’s just around the corner, sometimes opening up and talking about it is the next step to finding it.

Podium chasers…
If you’d asked me a year ago what my main driver is in this sport I would have said winning races. Fast forward and I’m finally coming to terms that positioning isn’t what drives me, it’s the journey of how I got there, regardless where I come.
I know what your thinking, yes George, that’s a great way to reassure yourself after taking home the silver medal at yesterdays standard duathlon, yes maybe you’re right, but it’s also made me think deeper about what it means to finish in that top spot.
Yesterday was the first race in a few months and no doubt the last one of the year. I was excited to put some hard weeks training into practice and see what the body was capable of. Myself and Louis Wright (left in image) battled it out from the gun all the way to the line finishing an eye watering 2 seconds apart after 1 hour and 47 minutes of racing.
Louis and I at one point in the last 5k sparked up a conversation, yes, while running sun 3:40 pace we decided to have a chat, we had never met before and yet the competition between us both didn’t seam to matter, we were both just happy to be racing and to share in the moment.
I’ve realised that the journey and the people you meet along the way make for richer memories and experiences than those times you can say you crossed the line first.
In the words of , no one cares or remembers where you finished in a race, they care about how you got there.

STEPPING UP MY GAME FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH CEREBRAL PALSY
I put my body through its paces every day as a triathlete. I'm constantly pushing it to the limits and trying to better yesterday. For those living with Cerebrally Palsy taking one step let alone 10,000 a day can be daunting, challenging and even impossible.
This STEPtember, every dollar I raise will provide vital equipment, therapy and services to children and adults living with cerebral palsy. Please help me support this great cause!

Making the most out of what you have available.

If there is one thing I’ve learned during the pandemic and most recently moving half way around the world, it’s that you sometimes need to make the most out of what you have at your disposal. With pools being closed, limits on how far you can ride or even how long you can exercise for outside there have been many times when we have all had to adapt.

At first I found it hard to adjust, the routine I had become to love was thrown out the window and I could’t quite find the motivation to adapt and to be honest I think I made more excuses than ever, finding every reason not to get a session done.

Thankfully over time I have now realised that sometimes life will through a few hurdles in our way, it’s about how we can quickly react and adapt to these that will set us up for the best success in the long run.

I’m currently living between two locations and don’t alway have access to a bike or a training pool. Last week I went for a run instead of a ride I had planned because I got home late and only had 30 minutes to get some training done. Yesterday I swam 1.5k in a 12m pool because that’s all I had access too. I’m learning not to get frustrated but instead to use what I have to get some training in.

I appreciate training plans are there to stick to but sometimes we need to be comfortable with missing a structured session and finding the best possible solution given the circumstances.

So next time you get thrown a spanner be confident to make changes, you’ll feel great getting a session done even if it’s not exactly what was prescribed.

📸 - There may be a lot that I miss about my Australian life but one of the great things about being home is having the brother around. He’s not too shabby with the camera and can ride a bike fast enough to keep up with me on the runs to capture the action.

Calm before the storm…

We’ve all been there, 10 minutes to race time, the mixed emotions, the nerves, the excitement and the smiles.

I’ll focus here on the smiles and the plan in my mind of how yesterday’s race will have panned out, the excitement to get another race under my belt.

Fast forward to 4 minutes into the swim. I’d started off strong (no doubt too strong) and gradually, swimmer after swimmer would go past, I would try to stick on feet but the arms were having none of it.

I will not sugar coat this… I wanted to swim to the edge of the lake and get out, smiles had turned to anger and frustration, my motivation was non existent, I felt like a failure.

The bike and run came with similar confronting thoughts, “why do I do this”, “I’m not anywhere where I want to be in the sport, “should I pack in triathlon”. It was all rushing through my mind as I tried hard to grasp the ongoing battle my body was having keeping up with others.

I appreciate this is a slightly more negative post than usual but I’m also not one to shy away from the harsh reality of this sport and the highs and lows of mental health that surround it. I’m also aware that social media content shouldn’t mislead by showing just the positives, that’s fairytale, this is reality.

I’m glad to get to the end of yesterday’s race. I know I’m fully capable of getting where I want to in the sport and I’m also aware that getting there isn’t easy and takes determination and the odd setback here and there.

My advice is, well I’m still learning myself so take this as you will… In moments of pain, in self disbelief or frustration, take a moment to re centre, I often like to reflect on how fortunate I am to be able to do this sport, there is so much going on in this world right now, just getting to the start line is a gift and for that I’m ever grateful.

And finally, as the old saying goes, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, keep learning, keep pushing on and keep speaking out about how you’re actually feeling. You will get there, we all will, it just takes a little determination and a little self belief.

Holiday training…

There is no question that holidays are a time for rest and relaxation, a time to recharge the batteries and give the body a bit of a time off.

However… us triathletes (and most sports people) find it hard to reach for the off switch in the fear that a few days or weeks away from training could undo the months of training prior.

I like to think I have found the happy medium. The stage at which I’m in holiday mode but also keeping my mental health charged with endorphins from the days exercise.

The one thing however with a holiday is the unpredictable nature of day to day life. The weather, planned activities, maybe your just not in the headspace to train or perhaps a few drinks have gotten in the way (he says whilst sipping on a rum punch).

I’ve come to realise that the secret to a healthy holiday balance is to not set anything in stone. Don’t arrive with a plan to train every day but instead plan to move the body in whatever way works best for you on said day. The harsh reality of planing something and not achieving it fills us with a sense of self doubt and disappointment. No plan = no failure.

Maybe you’re reading this and thinking this attitude is more of a cop out and a lazy approach to training but the truth is I’ve been there more times than I care to remember and have beaten myself up time and time again, sometimes so much so that it’s ruined my time away.

Next time you’re away remember to keep moving, if you get a session in that day then awesome, if not then that’s awesome too, you’ve learned to have a day off. Kudos to you either way.

First race back on home soil…

Mixed emotions coming off the back of my first race in a few good months and on home ground.

I’ll be honest, I wanted so much more from yesterday but it’s important to reflect on optimistic expectations.

The last few months I’ve moved my life half way around the world and with that haven’t been on the bike or in the water until the last two weeks… what was I expecting. It’s amazing how I went into the race expecting to be top of my game and forgetting that getting there takes more than a few weeks of training.

Despite feeling like I wanted more and getting my first puncture in 3 years it was so great to be racing with some familiar faces and seeing the brother put into practice the hard training together over the last 2 weeks.

For those of you like me who fill life with optimistic expectations I solute you as it’s this optimism that drives you forward and fills you with the belief you need to succeed. However, what I will say is be kind to yourself if, and ultimately when, things don’t go to plan. Take the lessons and stay positive, doing so will put you in the best place for the next time it matters most.

Roll on some solid training and September’s full race calendar.

Chapters…

It’s hard to sum up in an instagram post the last chapter of my life over in Australia, so much change, so many amazing people and a totally different world we live in.

In April 2018 I traveled the furthest I have ever been on a plane to rekindle a lost relationship. July 2018 I packed my bags and moved to Australia to start a new beginning with and to give triathlon a proper go.

Three years later I truly found the sport of Triathlon, I met some inspirational and life long friends, I smashed a few sporting goals of my own, started a new career in the beautiful world of Disability Technology, set up a side hustle building and sourcing bikes for the masses and last and certainly by no means least asked Maddie to marry me.

There is no way I can thank every person who made all of this happen in such a short post but if you’re reading this then know that you played a part. Thank you.

I can’t hide from the fact that being back in the UK is strange, somewhat overwhelming and there are so many unknowns but seeing family members and catching up after being away for so long is priceless.

Four big races coming up in the calendar for me so it’s been all hands on deck to get race ready after a few weeks without a bike and no access to swimming. Excited to be back racing in the UK. If you’re London or Oxford based I’m keen to know all the details on where, when and who to train with. Please drop me a DM.

Firing on all cylinders!

Four years ago I did my first triathlon and I can honestly count on one hand how many of those races since I have got to the run, been comfortable and been able to push hard.

For those who have followed my journey will know the sad reality of my racing is that gut issues almost always inhibit my race. Until now!

Five weeks ago I was put in contact with . David is fellow triathlete and dietician. Over the past few weeks he has helped breakdown the root cause of my gut issues and set me onto a stronger path for success in the sport.

I won’t give away all the details of just what changes have been made to my diet but I think the results speak to them...

My quickest half marathon during a 70.3 was ~1:28:35. Racing last weekend at Challenge Shepparton I squeezed in a 1:18:57, nearly a whole 10 minutes quicker and with zero gut issues at all, no cramps, no pain and 100% focus on the running.

I am naturally scared to speak too soon but I’m just too excited to finally feel like I have unlocked my full potential as a triathlete and can’t wait to race Cairns in just under eight weeks time with the freedom to race hard with confidence.

My one tip to anyone suffering with gut issues. Don’t be like me and wait four years to do something about it, it’s truly amazing how even the smallest of changes can have such a big impact on your gut health.
