What an evening, with 2 fallow pickets walking in the field behind the steel buck target the plan was modified and we tried to get into those, being the last day of their open season. We managed to get into 50 metres, they both presented but the guest wasn't ready, and that's ok if you're not comfortable, there's always another day. It was still early doors and very warm...
Back to plan A, where we came into a fine roebuck in woodland, about 40 metres away, partially obscured by a pen fence. The shot would have been tricky threading the round through a fence, so we waited. He cleared the fence obstruction, but by then we were losing a safe backstop, and he began to bark not being sure about us. So we had to leave him too.
Another big roebuck crept into a spinney some time later and he was what we call top tier, so not the match for the target quarry of the evening. A fine buck to observe.
And right on last knocking we spot 2 roe, unable to s*x at the range they were, we swiftly made ground along the darkening hedge line, to within 70 to 80 metres of these 2 roe.
One being a mature buck, that fitted the bill, we got into a position on the sticks and were lucky enough that he couldn't make us out completely with the failing light. With 5 mins of daylight to spare we had the right angle present and there was our window!
again 110gr ttsx, doing their job perfectly.
made it possible to hold our position comfortably while the buck presented a clean harvest.
