Bike(s) of the Week! 🚲🚲

We’ve got some brilliant children’s bikes ready for little riders, school commutes and their next big adventures! If you’re looking for an affordable bike for your child, pop down to the workshop during opening hours and see what we have in stock.

They won’t be around for long! https://www.bsbcoop.org/opening-hours (link also in bio)

Adult bikes are our primary focus at the Spoke, but we’re always happy and grateful to receive children’s bikes too. If your child has outgrown a bike, or you have one you no longer need, please consider donating it. If it can be refurbished, we give it a second life as an affordable ride for someone in the community, with some bikes also supporting community projects. 💛

It’s always amazing to hear how Broken Spoke can make an impact long after someone leaves the workshop. We recently heard from Laura, a previous workshop attendee, who shared how the bike maintenance skills she built with us gave her the confidence to take on repairs when out in the Australian bush. She recently took a slight detour home to revisit the salt lake she once cycled to, and was kind enough to share her memories and her current set of wheels with us. 💛🚲

A huge thank you to everyone who donated a bike this summer! 🚲🥰

We received an amazing 65 bikes, adult and children’s, and every single one helps make a difference.

Each donated bike is assessed through our refurbishment programme. If it can be restored, we give it a second life as an affordable ride for someone in the community, with some bikes also supporting projects such as our recent mums and kids cycling programme with Flo's The Place in the Park. If a bike is beyond repair, we strip it for usable parts and recycle the rest wherever possible to keep waste to a minimum.

Sales from refurbished bikes help fund the running of our workshop and wider community initiatives, so your old bike really does go the extra mile!

And we’re always looking for more! If you have a bike gathering dust and would like to see it put to good use, bring it along to the workshop during opening hours.

Thank you for helping to keep bikes rolling and our community cycling. 💛

Last year, we teamed up with our friends at Flo's - The Place in the Park to deliver cycle training for mums and kids as part of an Equal Start Oxford community project. Equal Start Oxford is a community project responding to inequalities in access, experience and outcomes faced by Black and minoritised women & birthing people (those from the global majority) living in OX4.

Led by an all-female team of instructors, the sessions offered a welcoming, supportive space for local mums and children to build cycling confidence and skills.

We are so pleased to have partnered with Flo's The Place in the Park again this August to deliver more of these sessions, with funding secured by Flo's from Active Travel, and Broken Spoke providing the bikes and trainers, as well as some basic bike maintenance training, such as puncture repair.

12 mums and children joined us in the peaceful surroundings of Florence Park for friendly, confidence-building cycle training. It was brilliant to see everyone grow in confidence, practise new skills and build stronger road awareness together. 🚲💛

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the sessions happen. It was a joy to meet so many keen cyclists and to support more people in our community to feel confident on two wheels. 😀

New Blog Alert! - Real stories from the volunteers who help drive our co-op. 💛🚲

Ever wonder what it’s like to volunteer at the Spoke? We are excited to share a new blog series where we talk to volunteers both past and present - hearing about their personal journeys, highlights, challenges and aspirations.

This month we spoke to volunteer mechanic Martin. Discover how he went from retirement to recycling bikes, and why volunteering at the Spoke made for the perfect pastime.

Beryl’s Night has been part of Broken Spoke since the very beginning. Launched in 2012 with community funding and volunteer support, this monthly social workshop was created as a welcoming space for women, trans and non-binary people to build confidence, learn bike maintenance skills and feel more at home in the cycling world. 🚲

Join us on the first Thursday of every month (6.30pm-8.30pm) for a relaxed, friendly evening of fixing, learning, sharing skills and meeting new people — no judgement, just good company and bikes. Oh and cake of course! 🍰

Book online or turn up and pay on the night! To learn more about the sessions coming up please see our website: https://www.bsbcoop.org/beryls-night

We hope to see you there!

We’re excited to be launching Bike Tales, a new newsletter series celebrating the brilliant bikes and riders in our community. From unforgettable journeys and trusty commuters to clever repairs, custom builds and full restorations, we’d love to shine a spotlight on the stories behind your ride.

To kick things off, our General Manager Loïse shares the tale of a 1951 vintage bicycle being brought back to life at Broken Spoke. Got a Bike Tale of your own? Tag us in your stories on socials or send your tale with a photo to [email protected], and you might feature in our next newsletter!
