This summer's heatwaves and drought have put immense pressure on our green spaces, but our team has worked tirelessly to protect the trees, plants and shrubs across the Park and University grounds. 🌿☀️

Since Thames Water introduced water restrictions on 23 July, our team has continued caring for newly planted trees and delicate plants using untreated water, following Environment Agency guidelines.

Thanks to their dedication and hard work, many of our plants have not only survived but continue to thrive. 🌸💚

You may have seen yesterday’s Oxford Mail article about the ‘fluorescent’ algae spotted in the River Cherwell and questions about whether it could be toxic. We investigated and found it was actually harmless duckweed, not toxic algae. While there’s no concern from the duckweed itself, we still recommend staying out of the water and taking care around the river.

Guess who's back? 🤖

Spot the robot visited us again this week, to roam the site, creating detailed maps of trees and pathways while using its sensors to track environmental changes between visits.

Helping nature thrive across our estate 🌼

Supported by the Oxford Sustainability Team, our wildflower meadow is boosting biodiversity by creating the perfect habitat for pollinators and native plants. Thanks to yellow rattle, the "meadow maker", new species are already appearing, including a naturally occurring orchid! 🌿🐝🦋

Alongside projects like this, the Parks Team is creating wildlife-friendly spaces through reduced mowing, thoughtful planting, and careful tree management, providing valuable habitats for insects, birds, and other wildlife.

Take a moment to visit Sobell House Hospice Charity's Rainbow of Ribbons display in University Parks. This beautiful installation is a heartfelt tribute to loved ones who are no longer with us, with each ribbon dedicated in remembrance of someone special.

The display will remain in place until the end of August, creating a peaceful and reflective space for visitors to pause, remember, and celebrate cherished memories.

🌿 Following on from Josie's introduction to the Genetic Garden, Arboricultural Manager Sam Prior takes a closer look at one of its most fascinating residents.

This remarkable Crataegomespilus is a hybrid of hawthorn and medlar, demonstrating the genetic diversity at the heart of the garden. But that's not all. It's also grafted onto hawthorn rootstock, meaning different parts of the tree have different origins.

Originally designed for teaching and research in the new science of plant genetics, the Genetic Garden continues to reveal extraordinary stories hidden within seemingly ordinary plants.
