Oswestry Tennis Club invited local businesses/Community Groups to enter a fun doubles tournament, sponsored by DRE & Co., Chartered Accountants, as part of the Oswestry Community Games initiative.
Nine businesses/Community Groups entered a pairing each and two Pools were formed.
Pool A saw Salop Fish Bar, represented by Lucas Haralambous and Matei Balasa finish top with Cockshutt Windows, represented by Martin & Bronwen Jenks finishing second. These firms qualified for the semi-final stage with the other three being eliminated having all finishing on the same number of points as each other, just a single point behind Cockshutt Windows in a very tight group. These were OTT Rusty Rackets, represented by Carolyn Moir and Fiona Wilson, Jolly Garden represented by Xiaomin Guo and Jeffrey Li and Evastore represented by Patrick & Ella Evans.
Pool B saw two firms finish on 7 points to qualify for the semi-final with Wynnstay Hotel, represented by Chris Birdsell and Calin Balasa finishing an agonising 1 point behind to miss out along with Oswestry Team Tennis representatives Riley Cott and Joe Williams. The Pool winners were Dairi-Pak, represented by Gavin & Alys McDonald who beat OFTEC, represented by Adrian Lightwood and Christine Whittingham in a play-off.
Salop Fish Bar played OFTEC in the first semi final with Lucas & Matei coming out winners whilst in the other semi-final Martin & Bronwen beat Gavin & Alys to secure Cockshutt Windows the other place in the final.
The final was nip and tuck throughout with some great tennis played before Salop Fish Bar crossed the line to win 10-7. Lucas and Matei were awarded the winners prizes whilst all four finalists were presented with Oswestry Community Games medals.
Gary Edwards, tournament organiser wishes to thank DRE & Co for sponsoring the event enabling refreshment and prizes to be provided, club members for helping on the day and all of the businesses/community groups and representatives for taking part.
It is hoped that the tournament will be repeated next year.
