Shropshire Paddlesport

Shropshire Paddlesport We have a large group of qualified coaches, and we are affiliated to the British Canoe Union (BCU), the sport’s national governing body.

The aim of the club is to provide paddlesport opportunities and coaching for everyone; those who simply enjoy recreational paddling on placid water, those who seek the challenges and excitement of white water, others who want to get fit, race or even those who have ambitions to compete for their country! The term “paddlesport” covers all types of canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding, and the club has a range of boats of different types which are available for use by members along with 5 paddle boards. There are a large number of different paddlesport disciplines and we offer a variety of those, based upon the desires of our members and practical considerations (for example Shropshire offers limited opportunities for surf or sea kayaking…). We hold the Clubmark accreditation which defines a set of core criteria to ensure that clubs work to a set of consistent, accepted and adopted operating standards.

“Sport England recognises and values the commitment made by sports clubs to develop high quality, welcoming environments for young participants. The development of clubs that encourage young people to take-up sport, improve their talents and give them the option to initiate and maintain life-long participation in sport is an essential part of our work to support the sporting infrastructure in England.”

The club operates a rigorous safety policy on and off the water to ensure that both paddling activities and the wider issues concerning the protection of children and vulnerable adults are closely controlled.

While the marathon boaters enjoyed a burn up the canal practicing for the start of the hasler racing season.
The rest of us enjoyed a club session using our slalom poles. We went from synchronised kayaks to multi craft racing.

Shropshire Paddle Sport, working with the Inland Waterway Association, would like to warmly invite you to join us on the canal as part of the Heritage Open Day. With the Fly boat Saturn docked at Queens Head, we would like to offer members of the community a chance to have a go at Kayaking/canoeing with us on the afternoon of 19th September.

We will provide the equipment and qualified instructors; all you need is a can-do attitude and, potentially, a change of clothes for after.

The club is offering two time slots: 12:00 to 13:45 and 14:00 to 15:45.

Cost £15 per person.

We have changing rooms/toliet facilities.

On arrival, please present yourself to a member of the team, and we will help you onto the water.

After a fun-filled morning of paddling around the stunning Bala Lake, both seasoned and new members of Shropshire Paddlesport gathered to hone their rescue skills, putting their expertise to the test in a supportive and encouraging environment. The warm water was a perfect setting for this exercise, making it an ideal day to get comfortable with the rescue techniques and build confidence on the water.

Another fantastic weekend with Michal Madera and Natalie of Sixknots paddling through London from Westminster to the Thames Barrier. Great views, some challenging paddling, interesting tidal flows with good camping, food and fellowship.

What a fantastic weekend of sea kayaking on the Pembrokeshire coast!

Twelve club members, aged from 14 to 68, enjoyed two days of paddling led by Advanced Sea Kayak Leaders Amy Apple Goolden and Martin Leonard. The group included both experienced paddlers and members venturing onto the sea for the first time.

Despite some challenging winds, we explored the coastline around Porth Clais and Fishguard, paddling through caves and narrow channels, rock hopping and developing our skills along the way. Highlights included Cathedral Cave, The Slot and the spectacular Pembrokeshire scenery, made even better by plenty of sunshine.

A thoroughly enjoyable weekend with great company, memorable paddling and lots of tired but happy faces by the end!
