🦅 DEBUTANTS – MAKING THEIR MARK! 🦅

This weekend wasn’t just about the result — it was about giving people an opportunity to play rugby, be part of a team and experience what the Flying Eagles are all about. ❤️🖤

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate FOUR Flying Eagles players who made their debut this weekend:

👏 Sam Barrett
👏 Sam Hodgson
👏 Will Foster
👏 Phil Griffin

And Phil’s story deserves a special mention…

🏉 Phil had never played rugby before.
🏉 He’d never attended a Flying Eagles training session.
🏉 He simply came down to see what we were all about.

Then he decided to give it a go.

He put his boots on, got himself ready and played the final 20 minutes of the game! 🔥

That is exactly what Mixed Ability Rugby is about. There are no barriers to having a go. You don’t need years of experience, you don’t need to be the biggest or fastest, and you certainly don’t need to know everything about rugby.

Sometimes you just need someone to say:

“Come down and give it a try.”

And Phil did just that. 🦅

A massive congratulations to all four of our debutants. We hope this is the first of many games in a Flying Eagles shirt!

🏉❤️🖤 MORE THAN JUST A RUGBY MATCH ❤️🖤

Yesterday’s game against Port Talbot Panthers was a brilliant reminder of what mixed ability rugby is all about.

The game was played hard, competitively and, most importantly, in great spirit. There was plenty of effort, plenty of laughs and some fantastic rugby — but once that final whistle blows, the competition stops. 🤝

And that’s when the real Flying Eagles spirit comes through.

Both teams headed back into the clubhouse together to share food, a drink and plenty of conversation. Players, coaches, supporters and volunteers all coming together as one rugby family. 🍻🍽️🏉

A huge thank you to Port Talbot Panthers for making the journey to Oswestry and helping make it such a fantastic afternoon. We hope you enjoyed your day with us and we look forward to seeing you again. 👏

A massive thank you also goes to:

🟨 The referee — for giving up your time and helping us enjoy another great game.

🍔 The clubhouse staff and volunteers — for keeping everyone fed, watered and looked after.

📣 Our pitch-side supporters — your encouragement and noise make such a difference to our players.

’Twas the night before match day, and all through the club,
Not a player was stirring, not even for grub.
The shirts had been hung in the changing room with care,
In hopes that the Flying Eagles soon would be there.

The boots were all ready, the balls on the ground,
With spirit and laughter around.
For Port Talbot were coming, the first whistle was near,
And the excitement was building — the best time of year.

With courage and teamwork, commitment and pride,
We’d run hard for each other, with teammates beside.
No matter the score, one thing would ring true:
We’d play for our club, and for me and for you.

So sleep well tonight, for tomorrow we fly,
With Eagles together, our heads held high.

🎉🏉 50 YEARS OF OSWESTRY RUGBY CLUB 🏉🎉

Tonight, Oswestry Rugby Club celebrates its 50th birthday, and we’re delighted that some of our Flying Eagles players will be there to celebrate this fantastic milestone with the wider Oswestry rugby family.

Although the Flying Eagles are a relatively new chapter in the club’s story, we’re incredibly proud to be part of the history of Oswestry Rugby Club.

🏉 A little bit of history

Rugby has a long and slightly stop-start history in Oswestry, with organised rugby being played in the town as far back as 1900. The club was re-formed several times over the following decades, but the beginning of the modern Oswestry RFC came in 1976, following a public meeting at the Wynnstay Hotel.

The club grew quickly, initially playing at Gate Acre and using the Wynnstay as its clubhouse. By 1979, Oswestry RFC had moved to its present home at Park Hall, where the club has continued to grow and develop ever since.

🪖 From Officers’ Mess to Rugby Club

And there is something rather special about the building we call home.

The Oswestry RFC clubhouse is the old Officers Mess of Park Hall Camp a place with a remarkable military history stretching back more than a century.

In 1915, Park Hall was handed over to the military and a huge training camp was established there. Thousands of troops passed through Park Hall during the First World War, training before being sent to the Western Front. The site also included a military hospital, while the surrounding land was used for trench warfare training.

Park Hall continued to have a military role through the Second World War and later became a training centre for Infantry Junior Leaders. The camp finally closed in 1975, just as the modern era of Oswestry Rugby Club was getting underway.

So when we walk through the doors of Oswestry Rugby Club, we’re not just entering a clubhouse we’re stepping into a small piece of Oswestry’s history.

From soldiers preparing for war, to generations of rugby players, families, volunteers and now the Flying Eagles, the building continues to be a place where people come together.
