The pond in spring mill is well over due some tlc….
The good news is the council seem to understand there is some importance to this maintenance with work to be planned for thornes park pond.
Hopefully they will add the pond at spring mill to the schedule of works this winter….
Everyone loves the lake in Thornes Park but it can sometimes smell and is in need of some improvements for both visitors and the wildlife that lives there 🦆
Bathymetric surveys have been carried out identifying a significant build up of silt in the lake affecting the inlet and outlet. This is made up of leaves, dead aquatic plants and weeds, fish and bird waste, and other decaying organic matter.
Silt reduces moving water, causing stagnation and further depleting oxygen levels. The good news is that the silt is able to be cleared effectively without draining the lake.
The clearance of this silt is due to be completed during winter dormancy so as to have minimal impact on the natural environment.
Works to improve the area around the lake including new knee rail fencing, planters, repairing of paths and new seating are being finalised and I will share dates for work as soon as they are available.
This project has taken longer than expected for many reasons but it will be good to see the duck pond looking back to its best in the not too distant future.
