JOE MCGOWAN | FIGHT CAMP

Joe is never out of the gym so “fight camp” seems an odd phrase but he’s definitely ramped up the intensity for this one.

He’s been putting a lot of time into his MMA over the last few years and continues to develop into a complete fighter, working on every area of the game.

One of the best things about preparation at Power House is the team around the fighters. It’s not just the competitors. Our hobbyist members put in the rounds, push the pace and help prepare our fighters for fight night.

Fighting is a solo sport but getting a fighter ready for the cage is a team effort.

Let’s go Joe!

MMA COMBINATION

Here we look at how to catch up to an opponent who is constantly running away and sliding out of range when you try to engage.

Start with the jab cross. Your opponent backs off and you feel yourself overextending on the last shot trying to reach them.

Instead of recovering to your stance and shuffling forwards, a quicker option that covers more ground is to roll through into southpaw.

The important part is that this is a roll, not just walking forwards. If the opponent suddenly puts the brakes on, we still want our head movement in place so we’re not walking straight onto a shot.

As you arrive in southpaw, win the outside foot position with your right foot. This does two things. It keeps your head off the centre line and gives you a clear line for the left hand straight down the middle.

Coming out of the roll, your right side should already be loaded, allowing you to throw the right hook into the left cross from southpaw.

If they’re a runner, they’re likely to keep using their footwork to ride these shots and try to get away.

That’s where we slide the left foot up towards the right and fire the right kick to the body.

Going to the body is a good option here because everything we’ve thrown so far has been aimed at the head.

The slide allows us to keep covering ground quickly rather than resetting our feet and giving them another opportunity to escape.

After the right kick, recover back to orthodox and you’re back in your dominant stance.

Think of this as a modern MMA version of the old-school karate blitz, combining the ability to cover ground quickly with the head movement and positioning from western boxing.

You can find this combination explained in greater detail among many other MMA & kickboxing techniques over at .

JUNIOR MMA | AGES 9–15

A look at some of the work from this week’s Junior MMA session. We don’t just teach the kids how to throw punches and kicks. They learn how to wrestle, control positions, attack and defend.

This week we were working from the over under position, learning how to establish the cross collar and use it to create the opening for the knee.

The photos show just one small part of what goes into the sessions. Every week the juniors are learning new techniques, putting them into practice and building their confidence along the way.

If you’ve got a child aged 9–15 who’s interested in MMA, get in touch with us about our Junior MMA classes.

Junior Grading. Two excellent gradings today for James and Rueben. Both students passed with great scores and are great examples of what we expect from our junior students for each grade.

James achieved his Green belt and displayed excellent kicking skills to all target levels. He also demonstrated higher level kicking ability with the demonstration of his spinning back kick in combination. He has great form on his techniques and this translates well into speed and power. He showcased a wide array of defensive skills to both punches and kicks. Well done James 👏🏻

Rueben achieved his Blue belt. He has really put in the work and earned this promotion after spending some time at Green belt. You can see he now has the ability to move from one stance to another during combinations as well as his basic defensive skills in his opposite stance. This is the hardest part about Blue belt and he did exceptionally well. Congratulations Rueben 👏🏻

We will have one more junior grading day before the end of the year.

4 WEEK MMA BEGINNERS COURSE 🥊

That’s a wrap on the beginners course. The team have covered a lot in a short space of time. Basic striking, 2 takedown options, guard passing, 3 submissions, takedown defence, wrestle ups and sweeps.

The main thing I wanted to get across was that everything we learnt to attack with, we also learnt the defence to. So they’re not just learning techniques, they’re starting to understand how the different areas of MMA work together.

Some really good progress from everyone over the 4 weeks and it’s been great watching them put it all together in the sessions. Well done 👊🏻

Next course starts in January.

OLI TERO | FIGHT CAMP

Great session with Oli getting some extra work in ahead of his third fight in Dublin.

We’ve been working on making the pads as MMA specific as possible, linking explosive striking combinations straight into takedowns, ground and pound and takedown defence.

It’s great to have the opportunity to work with the Subzone Fight Academy fighters and add some extra striking and specific work to their preparation.

Always good working with fighters who want to get better and are willing to put the work in.

Oli is looking sharp. He fights 26th September in Dublin. Let’s go Tero!
