MMA STRIKING.

This month we’re covering the spinning hook kick.

As your opponent throws the jab, parry it across your centre line with your rear hand. As you make contact, use the parry to start your rotation and immediately spin into the hook kick.

Because your opponent has missed the jab, the side of their head is often left exposed, creating the perfect opening for the kick to land cleanly.

The key is making the parry and spin one smooth movement rather than treating them as separate techniques. This allows you to disguise the kick and generate more speed through the rotation.

Give it a try and drop a comment if it works for you 👊🏻

WHEN IS SOMEONE READY TO COMPETE?

The qualities we look go beyond just performing techniques, we need to see the ex*****on in sparring. A great gauge is to see how newer members who have that edge about them perform in their rounds with some of the more experienced members at the club.

We never force any of our students to compete but if you’re showing the attributes and ability that is required to be a competitor, we will take you to one side and ask the question of you.

WEEKLY BAG DRILL

Using a stool or chair to kick over is a great way to develop proper knee chamber and technique on your head kicks.

Having a physical object to clear forces you to use the correct mechanics. If your chamber isn’t high enough, you’ll quickly find out when you clip the stool, which never feels great!

As your flexibility, balance and technique improve, gradually increase the height by stacking additional objects on top to continue challenging yourself.

3 rounds x 2 minutes
30 seconds rest between rounds

Make sure to give this drill a try and let us know how you find it 👊🏻

A glimpse into our MMA class this week.

This week we’ve been focusing on single leg defence and turning defence into offence.

We use a strong knee to the body to break posture and create the opportunity for the snap down. From there we attack the ankle and drive our opponent over, using the hand on the back to prevent them rolling us through with the momentum.

Once on top, we use a strong cross face to flatten them out and establish solid pressure. From there we knee cut into mount, climb to high mount and finish with ground and pound.

It’s not just about defending the takedown, it’s about capitalising on the opportunities it creates.

JUNIORS CLASS

The jab is the shot everyone throws the most, so equally you should spend the most time working on how to defend and use their jab to your advantage. Here the juniors are working on the parry to set up counter shots.

If this is something you think your child would enjoy drop us a message for more details👊🏻

The club was on fire tonight ! Solid work in both classes from the team.

MMA STRIKING

This month is all about the spinning hook kick.

Fire the jab to gauge your distance, then whip in the rear body kick. As you land, bend your knees and use that loaded position to generate the power and momentum for the spinning hook kick.

The beauty of this setup is that if your opponent blocks the body kick with their arms, they often leave the side of their head exposed, creating the perfect opening for the spinning hook kick to land.

Give it a try and drop a comment if it works for you 👊🏻
