Mixed martial arts is an excellent way to stay fit & motivated while learning the skills needed to survive in our ever changing society. This adult mixed martial arts class is not taught as a sport but with self-protection and self defence in mind. I am very proud that we have a relaxed, friendly & welcoming atmosphere and this is something I feel very strongly about maintaining. I am very particular when taking on new students as they have to reflect the same ethos and attitude my existing students have. If there is a potential to disrupt the group or individuals within the class, then EFA would not be for them. People that come to our club, feel at ease to train and learn with no pressure or external influences that could hamper their progress. This makes for a happy student, productive sessions and excellent acquisition of skills...

Great class last night at Essex Fighting Arts www.essexfightingarts.weebly.com
Great to get the strike shields out and dust them off. But prior to this the guys went through some pad work and Tommy Brown went through a very hard session on the pads with me pushing him. πŸ€£πŸ™ˆ Fair play though, he did great.

Then on to some ups and downs with work on front kicks, side kicks, round kicks and rear kicks which I haven't done in donkeys years myself let alone these guys. Ha ha

Finally we were kicking the strike shields with front, side, rear and round kicks. We finished on pyramid kicks 1 to 5 and back to one. I also had a play, realising my fitness still isn't where it should be after the injuries. πŸ™ˆπŸ˜ But the bounce kicks were still there. πŸ’ͺ

The photo is from the full contract kick down competition I fought in back in the day so thought it was appropriate. I'm on the left.

Have a great week and see you next Tuesday. Ouss... πŸ™

Another amazing seminar from the boss Guru Bob Breen and also Phil Norman who was great. Home and knackered but so worth it training with all these amazing guys. Lots of fun, hard training and friendly people. Thanks to Marcus for training with me and Roshan Bains also on the sticks. Just great to catch up with Jeff, Lee, Bob, Julian and also awesome to see my sensei and old friend Mr Steve Merrett. 😊 Such a cool bunch of people and lots to process in my head.

Julian Gilmour I will definitely have to pop down to Camden Martial Arts one day to work on my hook and more. 😎 See you all again soon I hope πŸ™

A great class last night at www.essexfightingarts.weebly.com

I felt the need to work on those zombie legs and start to get the right stance with the rear heel raised. G**o Bob Breen talks about this lots and how much distance can be made up when striking but also while avoiding strikes. It gives the ability to spring forward, pivot and aids the body mechanics when crossing so very useful.

We got straight into snap back drills and you can see the difference when someone's foot is planted and they're compensating with their back pretty much hyperextending to avoid the punches. But with the heel raised, all you have to do is sink the heel to the floor and you've gained time and space. Equally, by extending the ankle you have more reach when jabbing. Easier said than done as watching people revert back to what their brain knows again was funny. But slowly and surely the muscle memory was kicking in.

Afterwards we put this to the test using the cross drill in the video and still maintaining the raised heel.

Great class guys and next week is our last week at Orsett Village Hall 🫣 Then on the 15th we're in South Woodham Ferrers Village Hall. See you next week. Ouss... πŸ™

A great class last night at www.essexfightingarts.weebly.com
Good to have Richard Jones and Phil Chalkley back in the mix. Was a great atmosphere and a fair few laughs shared as always.

Went through and reiterated Bob Breen's full nelson to 1/4 to 1/2 Nelson drill. We use these individually so much, but because it was a drill, I feel some of you got a little lost. As I mentioned and showed you, there are tonnes of techniques you can pull from this drill alone and if need be add strikes between transitions. An excellent drill I think!

We then went on to work on 'p**a kapala' from both left and right sides from various techniques. Again, it is something to master as all too often as you push them through for the throw. They enjd up being slightly further away and it pulls your center of gravity out, potentially pulling you over to the floor and then it becomes a ground fight. Remember the karate 'Kiba-dachi' stance having that nice straight back where you are strong and you can hang them off your arm. In 'hammer and anvil' thier head will end up at the top of your thigh giving you full control.

But as we said last night, the counter for this is that sneaky arm hooking your leg on the way through. Thus, keeping them controlled prior with your thumb into the nerve behind the jaw until you decide what to do with them or coax them into the throw. Or as we showed, transition into a neck guillotine choke.

Lastly we did a bit of transitional arm locks while circling the arm to take down. Quite a few left with a slightly more flexible arm after. 🀣

Have a great week and will see you next Tuesday. Ouss... πŸ™

A good class last night at Essex Fighting Arts www.essexfightingarts.weebly.com
Only a few of us but got to drag out the finite details and salient points of the techniques.

We got the gloves on and worked on a half guard within corto mano range. Clearing space to hit with shoulder bumps and more.

Then onto work from the cross as shown in the video by Steve and Phil Chalkley. Defences using elbow, dakup, shoulder rolls, distance, elbow destructs, inside guntings and more.

Por fin or finally drilling in everything again from hubud with figure 4 locks, kotegeshi, arm breaks, waki gatami, straight arm bars and more.

A great class and see you all next week. Ouss.. πŸ™

A great class last night at Essex Fighting Arts.

Took the guys through some padwork as well as including the more than occasional press ups, front kicks, round elbows, squat thrusts and one minute worth of punching with higher pace at the end. I was a sadist when I was a personal training people and this hasn’t changed! πŸ˜‚

After we went through some destructs on the jab and cross with round elbows and ascending elbows. Then adding eye strikes after each which is the icing on the cake for me.

Then on to One for One Hubud with the Bob Breen 2 on 1, waki gatame, figure 4 lock and take down, rear sweeps, parallel can’t, straight arm bars, switching to the left side, arm breaks and more. You can’t beat a bit of pain to make you feel alive. Ha ha Richard got more than a bit of pain but luckily his wrist is ok but slightly more bendy! 🀣

A great class guys and looking forward to next weeks class. Ouss… πŸ™

A great class last night at Essex Fighting Arts www.essexfightingarts.weebly.com
Initially taking the guys through the pads and through their paces. This video was taken a while ago with John Suarez (crack pipe) and was working the pads well. πŸ’ͺ

Following on from this we worked though some techniques from a jab, cross and hook using parrys, guntings and hammer fists.
Then drilling in various guntings from inside, outside using a backfist, rising and inside hooks to the bicep. And our favourite, the wrist gunting or destruct.

A brilliant class everyone and looking forward to next week. Ouss... πŸ™
