Riley becomes first District scratch matchplay champion

BROOKDALE’s Mark Riley gained himself an early birthday present when he became the first to lift the new Swailes and Squires District Golf Scratch Matchplay Trophy.
Riley,68 next Wednesday, September 9, rolled back the years to beat Saddleworth’s Lee Rowbotham 1up in a tense final played at Werneth.
The pair had been the top two seeded qualifiers of eight in June’s scratch championship - Riley claiming his eighth district title.
But the matchplay has added a new dimension to the season and Riley proved a battler.
Three times he took a 1up lead only to be pegged back.
Rowbotham did also lead after winning the 11th and 12th but left a host of putts short on the true but slow greens.
Riley was not to be denied - three times he made brilliant pars after errant drives - and when he got his nose in front for the fourth time at the 16th, two pars were enough to see him home by the narrowest of margins.
Local golf legend Alan Squires, who claimed 13 titles, one less than the late Harry Swailes, was on hand to both watch the first final and present the trophy.
Alan said he was proud to have his name associated with the new matchplay competition and urged the best golfers in the Oldham District to embrace the event in the coming years.
