Grand Finale – Steve Tyrrell Challenge Shield
It was a fitting end to the season as unbeaten sides Oldham and Longton faced off in a highly anticipated Grand Finale. Both teams had delivered convincing performances throughout the tournament, showcasing dominance and determination to reach this stage. Now, it all came down to the battle for the prestigious Steve Tyrrell Challenge Shield.
Oldham started the game with real intent, moving the ball confidently and maintaining strong structure. The forwards led from the front, taking the physical hits and driving play forward, while the backs supported well and defended as a disciplined unit.
Longton, boasting the tournament’s top try scorer, found it difficult to break through in the first half. Oldham’s defence was exceptional—every time Longton threatened, they were shut down. Even when their key runner managed to beat a couple of players, Oldham’s scrum-half ensured he went no further.
Jimmy and Fletcher set the tone early for Oldham, combining well in attack. Fletcher Wood produced a moment of brilliance, breaking through several Longton defenders to score the opening try of the match. Soon after, from a scrum, Yuhas spotted a gap and needed no second invitation—his quick footwork and pace left the defence behind as he crossed for Oldham’s second try.
As the game progressed, Longton began to find their rhythm. Oldham’s discipline slipped slightly, conceding penalties through a couple of no-arm tackles. Longton capitalised on this and managed to score their first try, bringing themselves back into the contest.
With the coaches urging control, Oldham responded. Yuhas once again took charge, linking play effectively. After a strong drive from Destin, Yuhas picked up from a broken play and powered over for his second try of the final, extending the lead to 15–5.
Oldham continued to apply pressure from all areas of the field. A flowing move involving Yuhas, Fletcher, Destin, Billy, and Devon nearly resulted in another score, only for Longton to regain possession near the touchline.
Relentless pressure paid off again when Yuhas broke through on the right, beating multiple defenders before being tackled just short of the line. Demonstrating great support play, captain George Grant picked up from the ruck to score Oldham’s fourth try, pushing the score to 20–5.
With just two minutes remaining, Longton managed a consolation try before the referee blew the final whistle.
Final Score: Oldham 20 – 10 Longton
