The Rebellion Way. 232 miles of quiet country lanes, ancient bridleways and single track routes around Norfolk.

Day 1:

Pop into the excellent Keep Pedalling bike shop in Manchesters’ Northern Quarter, for an additional spare inner tube. Hopefully it won’t be needed, but best have another just incase as the tracks around Norfolk are covered in razor sharp pieces of flint. After chatting for 20 minutes or so about the route, I dashed through the city streets to catch my train to Norwich.

The train to Norwich is direct, so no changes, which meant I could sit back and “let the train take the strain”, as the old British Rail advert used to say.

Arriving in Norwich I was met by my old friend J.P. and it was back to his house, where I’d kindly been invited to stay for the night. After a wonderful meal prepared by his wife Mary, John and I chatted into the early hours, catching up and talking about old times over a few drams of fine single malt. A comfortable bed for the night was much appreciated, as it would be my last for the next few nights.

Making the most of the summer weekends. Setting out in glorious sunshine, after a few hours rain squalls swept across the landscape so we had no choice other than to sit it out at the pub rehydrating with some of the landlords finest ales. When it was evident that the weather front would pass us, we pressed on to our moorland camp.

After a couple of light showers in the early hours of the morning, we woke to a glorious sunrise. The ride home was rain free.

The Somme Memorial, Heaton Park.

During World War I, Heaton Park famously served as the primary training ground for the Manchester Regiment’s “Pals” battalions. Between September 1914 and April 1915, thousands of local volunteers who enlisted together lived in a massive tent city in the park before deploying to the Western Front. Sadly, many of them never returned.

The conversation went something like this.

Me: “Do you fancy going out for a pint on Friday night?”

My mate: “Yes sounds good.”

Me: “Excellent. I’ll cycle over to yours straight from work.”

75 kilometres later we were in a pub near Blackpool, enjoying some of the landlords finest ales.

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, I rode 86 kilometres back home again. How far would you cycle for a pint?
