Larger breed horses have always had a special place in the equestrian world, and their popularity continues to grow. From heavy horses and cobs to draught crosses and maxi types, these impressive horses are winning hearts everywhere. ❤️

While their size and strength make them stand out, it is often their temperament that makes people fall in love with them. Many larger breeds are known for being calm, kind, sensible, and willing — true gentle giants with huge hearts. 🐎💕

They are admired in the show ring, enjoyed on hacks, trusted as family horses, and increasingly seen across different disciplines. Their steady nature, eye-catching presence, and dependable attitude make them a joy to ride, handle, and own. 🌟

Whether ridden astride, side saddle, driven, shown, or simply loved at home, larger horses prove that power and gentleness can go beautifully together. 👏

🐴🧼 𝘼 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙗𝙞𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙜𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙖 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙖𝙮… 🧼🐴

With equine flu cases rising further south, now’s a really good time for all of us to tighten up the little everyday habits that help keep horses healthy whether you’re out competing every weekend or enjoying life on a quiet private yard.

For those out and about:

🏇 Avoid horses touching noses at shows, from other yards
🪣 Bring your own buckets and avoid sharing equipment
🚛 Give trailers and lorries a good clean after travelling (ideally disinfect with a disinfectant such as Virkon, especially if the box has been shared with a horse from another yard for any reason)
🌡️ Get into the habit of checking temperatures, especially before and after shows or clinics

For smaller yards and happy hackers:

🐴 Be mindful of horses coming and going from lessons or competitions
👢 Clean boots and wash hands between different groups of horses
🧽 Keep shared areas and equipment as clean as possible
❤️ Keep an eye out for the “not quite right” horse before signs become obvious

It’s easy to think biosecurity only matters on big competition yards — but flu can spread in the air and happen anywhere!

Most importantly:
❌ Don’t ignore a cough or snotty nose
❌ Don’t travel a horse that seems under the weather, has any respiratory signs, or a fever (temperature >38.5C)
❌ Don’t share equipment and water sources between horses
✅ Phone your vet early on if there are any concerns of respiratory signs or lethargy/dullness
✅ Keep up to date with flu and strangles vaccinations (boosters currently advised every 6 months, whilst the risk is increased)

A few sensible precautions now can help keep everyone’s horses safe and keep plans on track for the summer ahead ☀️🐎
