BENEFITS OF BUILDING STRENGTH FOR YOUR EXPEDITION 🏔️🏋️

When it comes to training for your expedition, the main focus should always be cardio but that doesn't mean you should neglect any strength training.

Building strength before an expedition has huge benefits to your overall performance and enjoyment.

🔸Improves your uphill power on steep terrain

🔸Reduces your risk of injury (training and exped)

🔸Improves oxygen efficiency

🔸Compliments your cardio fitness

🔸Strong core and balance helps backpack carrying

🔸Enhances your recovery at altitude

🔸Digging deep builds mental resilience

🔸Strong ankles / knees / hips helps on uneven terrain

The list goes on! 👀

It's not about getting big and building loads of muscle, it's about building a strong foundation because hiking at altitude demands more from your body than you realise. 💪

WHY YOU'D RATHER BE OVER PREPARED THAN UNDERPREPARED... 🔥🙌

When it comes to expedition training, you'd much rather be overprepared than underprepared! You'll have spend a lot of money on this trip so it would be a total waste to go there and struggle every step of the way 🥵

Your training, organising and build up amounts to far more time than the adventure itself so put in the work and reap the benefits when you get there! 👏 There's not much downsides to doing a little too much training as long as you don't peak too early or burn out. Training for a big expedition will also change the way you look at your weekly routine and figure what's really important to your goals. 👀

"I NEED A WALK FOR MY MENTAL HEALTH" 🧠🏔️

Sometimes you just have to get away and into the mountains for your own sanity 🫶

If that's a walk around some local forest tree trails or summiting a 6000m peak in the Himalayas... It all helps. 💯

Does getting out into the mountains help your mental space? I find it gives me time to step away from the normal routine and just focus on one main objective. That also gives me time to focus and come back with a clearer mind 💫

FIVE HANDY BITS OF KIT YOU NEED ON YOUR NEXT EXPEDITION 🔥👏

If you're watching this video and didn't know about some of these bits of kit, your whole expedition experience is about to change for the better!

It takes years of kit changes and experience to find what works best for you and knowing about some of these gems so make sure you take them with you on your next trip 🙌

1. Hiking Poncho - Might not look as glamorous as your expensive jacket but it sure does the trick when the rain comes on! And it goes over your backpack 🤯

2. Camping Pillow - Getting a good night sleep is important on your trip so get yourself one of these to make it feel a little more like home 💤

3. Hot Water Bottle - If you get cold at night, take one of these with you. Fill it up with boiling water and you're toasty the whole night ♨️

4. P*e Bottle - To save you getting up 2 or 3 times a night, bring a p*e bottle and just do it in your tent. Just remember to empty it out in the morning 🤪

5. Mitts - If you get cold hands, you need to get yourself some mitts! They keep your hands so much warmer. These £15 mitts from the Decathlon out performed top end mountaineering gloves on Kilimanjaro Summit Night! 🙌

Obviously these aren't essential items but having these with you can make a huge difference to your trip.

What items have you taken with you in previous years that you won't leave at home again? Let me know in the comments below 👇👇👇

"I'M SHATTERED, I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN KEEP GOING!" 😴🏔️

As soon as you hear your teammate start with the negative talk, you've got to nip that in the bud quick! 😂

I've used many stern words to get people to the top especially if you know they can still push on. Different if they are actually suffering from altitude sickness etc 🤒

Most humans, don't wake up in the middle of the night in the freezing cold and decide to hike up a mountain for 12 hours so it can be a tough mental challenge. When your brain is saying you've had enough, I know you've still got more to give as I've been in that situation many times 🧠

Tag your hiking buddy who gets negative and wants to give up way too early! 👇

DO YOU SUFFER FROM LOWER BACK PAIN WHEN TREKKING? 💥⛰️

Try add in these exercises to your training routine! 🏋️

First of all, if you're experiencing any lower back pain that is consistent and sharp then please speak to your doctor. These five exercises are designed to help trekkers if they feel stiff and sore in their lower back after a long day on the hills carrying a backpack ⭐

🔸1. Step Glute Bridge - Works the glutes / hamstrings and can be done at the gym ie home.

🔸2. Body Weight Back Extension - Great for the building strength and training your lower back if done correctly.

🔸3. Elbow Plank w/ Side Step - Activates your core and flutes at the same time due to extra stepping movement.

🔸4. Single Leg Hip Thrusts - A more challenging exercise but amazing for your glutes and building uphill power.

🔸5. Backpack Walks - It's hillwalking specific and is designed to be done close to home. You can control the distance and weight so your body gets accustomed to the extra load.

It can be hard to isolate the lower back but building glute, hamstring and core strength will definitely help you out after those long hill days carrying your backpack ⛰️

Save this workout and try these exercises out when you are next at the gym. 🙌

STICK TO THESE FIVE COMPONENTS WHEN TRAINING FOR YOUR UPCOMING EXPEDITION 🙌🏔️

So you've booked an expedition and now it's time to start training but you're not quite sure where to start? 🤔

Expeditions at a higher altitude are always more difficult no matter how fit you are. The altitude will affect everyone differently so it's important you're fit and ready before you go away.

Follow these five components to keep on track! 👇

🔸Consistency - Will lead to progress so keep putting in the work! 🗓️

🔸Specificity - Keep your training specific and mimic the movements you will do on the mountain ⛰️

🔸Aerobic Training - Your cardiovascular fitness is going to be crucial to how you feel on the trip 🏃🏻‍♀️

🔸Strength Training - Working on strength can help with endurance and preventing injury 🏋️‍♂️

🔸Hiking / Backpack Walks - Get out for as many hikes as you can and add a weighted backpack to some of smaller daily walks 🎒
