Exercise can be a real marmite thing
I have always been active, as a kid I had two younger brothers and we would run, jump, fight, play, kick balls, shoot water pistols....we just didn't really stop
So I can't really relate when people say that they have never enjoyed exercise, it's just a part of my every day life and it always has been
What I can relate to though, is that for exercise to be done consistently, it probably has to be fun and enjoyable, at least most of the time
That's likely why as kids we were always to be found muddy, sweaty but happy with our day's play
As an adult, as life got more complicated and as time got taken up with other things, we often end up losing the PLAY and ENJOYMENT factor in our exercise choices
Perhaps we do exercise because we know we should
We turn it into a box ticking exercise in the pursuit of better health, or weight loss, or more energy
I can't fault those motivations, but I would encourage anyone who is in the pursuit of better energy, more vitality, easier weight loss, more fitness and strength, to find types of exercise that they really, really REALLY like
Exercise is easier to do when its sunny, dry, warm and all of the things in your life are tidy
Exercise is much harder to do consistently when its cold, wet, windy, and spanners get thrown into the mix at work, at home and other curve balls
When the going get's tough, you are much more likely to justify making time for some activity IF you really like it
It's pretty tough to convince yourself to justify time for doing something that you don't really like, or worse, hate
In the past, I've done various different types of training including triathlon, running, cycling and boxing...none of these really stuck with me because at the core of it, I just didn't really like doing it, I didn't like how my body felt when I was doing it, and I found it boring and un-motivating
Over the last year through discovering the benefits of strength training for my pregnant body, I've really found enjoyment in those basics
I was having fun, it felt good to be getting stronger and fitter, I really felt that the rewards were quite obvious and easy to recognise and I was enjoying the hell out of it
Did this make it easier for me to get out of bed on a cold wet day....YES
Did this make me more consistent over a period of months .... YES
Did I always show up for training...NO ...but I wanted to and that's the difference
I found a way to feel driven to go to my workouts, I found a way of moving my body that inspired me and motivated me
Having a long term goal was important, but fundamentally the day to day was driven by me enjoying myself
Have a think about this when you're setting yourself a target or a goal...what types of movements do you like doing, when does your body feel good doing exercise, what sort of things do you find inspiring?
If you're not sure, why don't you come down for a free trial of our group personal training
Trying out new things is a great way to discover if you like them or not....and the more confident that you can get with different types of movement, the easier it will be for you to make a decision on what you like to do
