BUCS 2023 ‘The 3peat’

For the third time in a row the University of Nottingham has won the British University Karate Championships (BUCS).

This year we smashed the previous BUCS points record gaining 143 BUCS points.

16 senior medals (4 golds 5 silver 7 bronzes)
6 novice medals (1 gold, 2 silver 3 bronze)

There were so many brilliant individual performance the list is seemingly endless. A huge well done to all of our athletes for battling throughout the weekend. A full UoN sport write up is being done and will be posted over the next couple of days.

Team titles:

Nottingham continued its dominance placing first in Team Kata for the 4th year in a row. Not dropping a single flag for the entire day.

The women’s team kumite went on to claim bronze in a tough women’s team kumite category.

Then in the Mens Team Kumite For the first time in over 40 years we were crowned British university champions, losing only one fight the entire tournament, scoring over 100 points and dropping just 7.

To get to this point has been a journey that started over 5 years ago with untold hours of coaching, meetings, admin, recruitment and preparation to get us to where we are today. Many people have helped made this happen but I must make special mention to a few.

Special mentions:

A huge thank you to all of the UoN sport staff for their support to the club and it’s athletes. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to represent the university at the highest level.

University of Nottingham Sport

A special thanks to Dan Tibbitt our CDC whose many efforts ensure really help ensure the club’s growing successes.

Thank you to Aidan Trimble for coaching throughout this weekend and for everything the FSK does for the club with supporting us and sorting out licensing, gradings etc.

FSK Federation of Shotokan Karate est 1986

Another thank you to James Burnett for coaching throughout the weekend. Always out there for our athletes ensuring everyone is always supported prepared and ready to give it their all on the tatami. You are a legend.

Thank you to Joseph Mongan some brilliant coaching this weekend and travelling up from Cannock for a ridiculous amount of hours over the last year to coach us every week. Your efforts are only matched by your tactics and Kumite knowledge we really appreciate it.

And finally to our Head Coach Sonny Roberts, since joining the club in 2017 you have created an environment where novices all the way up to performance athletes can thrive together and become one family. You embody what this club is all about. Only a handful of people understand the countless hours you have put into making this happen on a daily basis. This achievement is yours more than anyone else’s, I hope you enjoy every second of it.

Now the work starts for what lies ahead. Thank you to our whole squad and UoN family for the amazing weekend 💚💛

University of Nottingham Karate Summer Camp 2022
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇮🇪🇱🇻🇭🇰🇮🇷

Last weekend the University of Nottingham Karate Club hosted a invitational multinational training camp with some of the best athletes and coaches the UK has to offer.

Scottish national team coaches Martin Douglas and Stephanie Connell were invited to coach on the camp alongside UoN Coaches Sonny Roberts and Joe Mongan.

Steph and Martin have produced medallists at both World and European level in both Kata and Kumite, delivered some fantastic sessions for everyone involved.

It was great to see athletes from across various nations, create such a positive training atmosphere. The camp gave both Nottingham and visiting athletes the opportunity to form new training partnerships, working together as group to improve and push one another, becoming better as a collective.

Whilst karate is a currently non-funded sport, The University of Nottingham Karate Club offers the only English Performance Karate Program, with S&C, Recovery, Physio, Nutrition, WADA workshops, Psychology and unrivalled Karate facilities all accessible to our athletes.

Thank you to UoN Coaches, President and committee for all of your hard work organising.
