As I lock up tonight after our final session, it’s a time to reflect.
9 years ago, in May 2016 I signed the lease for the building to house Skateland. It was a huge risk to take on. I had a couple of great people around me to help with the work that was the start of what we now have. In fact one of those special people was in tonight skating. Two of my children worked tirelessly to help create Skateland, and my younger 2 children had to manage with their mum not being so available to them. Creating Skateland has certainly had its challenges along the way, juggling work, being a mum and having a business was tricky. It has certainly been a journey.
However we created something very special. A place where people can be themselves, they can forget about all life’s challenges, and just skate. Doing something fun and healthy. It is so nice to see people having fun and building relationships. It’s been a privilege to see people go from wobbling on hire skates to being so competent. I’ve seen people who started as young kids walk in now as adults. It’s also so good to see people who have been skating for 40+ years still coming in and looking so smooth on the wheels.
I want to thank everyone who has supported Skateland over the years, all our customers, you have been amazing. Many of whom are not just customers, you are friends.. To all our past and present staff and volunteers, we certainly couldn’t have done it without you. So many of you give up time every week to make Skateland work. For that I am forever grateful.
My biggest thank you is to my children for everything you have done for Skateland, and the sacrifices you made at times. I know it’s not always been easy.
We are working hard in the background to secure a new premises, and this time we know a little more about what to do, so the journey should be a little easier. We also have a wider pool of support.
For now, take care, and we will keep you all updated with developments.
