Handball is the second fastest indoor sport after Ice hockey, and is widely played in many European countries. It has also been an Olympic sport since 1936, with Great Britain making their first appearance at London 2012. Believe it or not, Handball has strong roots in the Nottingham area for over 20 years, thanks to the hard work and dedication of Colin Wills. The Nottingham team was initially fo
rmed as a University based club which allowed participation of a limited number of external players to compete in the National leagues. Formed in 1992, and very much a minority sport here in the UK, the club has attracted steady numbers (mainly due to exchange students) to allow it to exist over the years. Following the Olympics, and the media attention that the sport was given, there has been a surge in the number of clubs forming around the country, with many in and around the Midlands area. This is an area which previously the Nottingham club was the sole representative, whereas now, there are plans for two leagues for the 2013/14 season in the Midlands to cater for this demand. The club is now run by a dedicated committee, who are working alongside Nottingham City Council to promote the sport in the area, and capture the interest that was inspired and generated during the Olympic Games. One of the main problems in previous years, were the lack of opportunities for children to take up this fantastic sport, as most teams were predominantly adult clubs. This is set to change, as we are working with local schools in order to set up an Academy to develop talent at a young age, with the aim of development onto the national stage. The beauty of this sport is that it attracts people from all over the world with no divisions, and with a vibrant social life, it is a great way to make friends. Whether you wish to play competitively, want to try the sport for the first time, or just want to increase your fitness and have some fun along the way, we can guarantee those who try it out will be hooked within no time.
