As Drowning Prevention Week comes to an end, let’s remember that water safety is important all year round. 🛟

This week we’ve shared important messages about staying safe in and around water, from learning the Water Safety Code and how to Float to Live, to understanding the importance of supervision and CPR.

Whether you’re swimming, boating, paddleboarding, visiting the coast or enjoying time near rivers and lakes, remember:

🌊 Respect the water.
🏊 Learn to swim.
🛟 Know how to float.
👀 Supervise children.
🚨 Know what to do in an emergency.

Small actions can make a big difference and help prevent tragedies from happening.

Together, we can help make water activities safer for everyone and give more people the confidence and skills to enjoy the water safely.

Thank you for supporting Drowning Prevention Week and helping us share these life-saving messages. 💙

Children are safer around water when adults stay alert! 🛟

Whether you’re at the swimming pool, beach, lake or on holiday, children can get into difficulty quickly and often without making a sound.

Did you know? Drowning can happen in seconds, making active supervision essential. 🚨

Top tips for parents and carers:

👀 Always keep young children within arm’s reach around water.
📱 Put phones and distractions away when supervising.
🏊 Never rely on inflatable toys as a safety aid.
🤝 Make sure children understand basic water safety rules.
🛟 Encourage children to learn to swim and build water confidence.
👨‍👩‍👧 Agree who is responsible for supervising children when in groups.

Swimming lessons are a fantastic way to develop confidence and water safety skills, but supervision remains essential wherever water is present. 🏊

The best lifejacket a child can have is a vigilant adult! 🛟

CPR CAN SAVE LIVES 🫀

In an emergency, every second counts. If someone has been rescued from the water and is not breathing normally, starting CPR immediately can significantly improve their chances of survival.

Did you know? Brain damage can begin within minutes when oxygen is not reaching the brain. Early CPR helps keep oxygenated blood flowing around the body until emergency services arrive. 🚨

If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally:

✅ Call 999 immediately.
✅ Ask someone to find an AED (defibrillator) if one is available.
✅ Begin CPR straight away.
✅ Continue until help arrives or the person starts breathing normally.

You don’t need to be a healthcare professional to save a life. Learning CPR gives you the confidence to act when it matters most!

FLOAT TO LIVE 🛟

Cold water shock can affect anyone, whether you’re a strong swimmer or not. If you unexpectedly find yourself in the water, your instinct may be to panic and swim hard. Instead, remember:

✅ Tilt your head back and keep your ears submerged.
✅ Relax and focus on your breathing.
✅ Move your hands gently to help stay balanced.
✅ Spread your arms and legs to help you float.

The first minute in cold water can cause gasping, rapid breathing and panic. Floating helps you regain control of your breathing and gives you time to think clearly. 🌊

Once your breathing is under control:

➡️ Call for help if you can.
➡️ Look for the nearest safe exit.
➡️ If possible, swim to safety only when you feel able to do so.

Did you know? Even experienced swimmers can be affected by cold water shock. Knowing how to float can make the difference between surviving and getting into serious difficulty. 🚨

If you’re in trouble in the water, could save your life:

• Tilt your head back with ears submerged
• Relax and try to control your breathing
• Use your hands to help you stay afloat
• It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently

Practise floating at as supervised location, such as a swimming pool.

Remember it. Practise it. Share it.
