We travelled up the A1 to Alnwick to take on unbeaten in there first 3 games Alnwick Percy Rovers.

A change of formation with some key players missing and lads stepping in from the squad despite injuries this week being at a record high I think in the 6 years I’ve been involved with the team.

Nether the less, it was 110% effort from everyone from the first whistle! We were unlucky not to take the lead when Kieran Moffett hit the crossbar after a goal mouth scramble from a corner and the defence was staying strong dealing with some clever and quick forwards in the Alnwick front three.

Ben Mole & Alex Poole testing the Alnwick keeper and Poole himself hitting the crossbar again for Blyth. Lee Smith, Adam Douglass & Jordan Haig were battling hard in the midfield and with all the ascendency looking like it was in our favour, as always in football, just two minutes before the half time whistle, we stopped playing when it looked like the Ref was about to blow for a Blyth foul only for play to continue and a low finish across goal gave Alnwick an undeserved half time lead. 1-0 and some very frustrated team mates.

Second half was going to be a test of character for the players with a couple picking up more injuries and a swirling wind now with advantage to Alnwick, which they were using well to get in behind us, but again the defence was holding firm.

The Alnwick keeper deservedly getting his Man of the match award with more great saves, but he was beaten mid way through the half when Adam Douglass flicked on a header, Poole stayed strong to hold off the defender and break into the box before shooting low and the ball firing in at the near post. 1-1

We had more chances to hit Alnwick on the break and also had to defend well to keep it at 1-1 as the threat was always there. Then as cruel as the first half ended, a high ball was misjudged by the keeper which spun & bounced over his head and despite best efforts to clear was punished with a sucker punch 87th minute winner for Alnwick.

We made a little trip down the coast to face a Cullercoats who had won both there opening league games and had some good preseason form, including a 4-2 win the last time we met a few weeks ago.

We started well though and had the upper hand on 19 minutes when some good work down the right started with right back Aiden Beavis. A cross field ball was met by Billy Horne on the left, he played a one- two with James Angus on the edge of the box before firing low into the far corner.

It was a pretty much one way traffic and Cullercoats were kept out by the Independent back four and nothing really of note for keeper Chris Briggs to deal with.

Lee Smith was colossal in the centre of midfield winning every dual and holding it together well. Adam Angus missed a glorious chance to make it 2-0 when his shot somehow went wide from 8 yards out. And man of the match Billy Horne was first to every ball down that left hand side.

But a soft penalty was given when Aiden Beavis was judged to have had both hands in the Cullercoats attackers back from a corner and they pulled level from the spot with 4 minutes left of the first half.

Second half we had to defend well and dig deep to keep the score at 1-1. Billy Horne was still getting down the left and a number of crosses resulted in chances on goal but it looked like it was just not going to be our day.

Horne put in a corner from the right which fell to James Angus in a crowded penalty area and his poke towards goal was smashed into the roof of the net by Rhys Brown with just 6 minutes left on the clock.

A couple of chances for Cullercoats in the final minutes were stopped by the solid defence. And Billy Horne broke free and almost found James Angus with the chance to make it safe but it stayed 2-1 and Blyth get a deserved 3 points in the end.

Two games in quick succession to kick start the 2026/27 season and it couldn’t have got off to a worse start on Saturday as we hosted Cramlington Utd Reserves.

1-0 up in the first 15mins after some good work from Adam Angus to set up Independents Man of the Match, Jordan Haig on the edge of the 18 yard area who finished well in to the top far corner.
Then it all fell apart, lest said about the performance, the game and individuals the better!
Alex Poole set up Callum Hunter to grab a late consolation goal as it finished 6-2. One to forget!

We had an opportunity to put it right 48hrs later as we welcomed Bedlington United Reserves and with a changed lineup from Saturdays game and some strong words in the dressing room, we took an early lead through James Angus in the first minute ‘Bobby’ McCrudden with the assist.

We should really of been 3 or 4 up when man of the match, McCrudden added a 2nd for Independent on the half hour mark. Ryan McKee with the assist on his debut in centre mid.

Bedlington did pull one back shortly after half time but Adam Angus made 3- 1 to give us that breathing space as we looked to see the last 20 mins out.

Adam Douglass back after almost a year out with a knee injury on as a substitute grabbed a worthy wonder goal to crown his return to make the game safe at 4-1.

Bedlington did get another goal in the final minutes but it wasn’t enough as we finished 4-2 winners and a good reaction after Saturdays defeat.

Defeat in the final minute despite coming from 2-nil at half time in arguably our toughest test of preseason as we hosted Whickham FC Jacks. A much changed squad with players away on holiday and missing through work we had no fewer that 6 players making there first appearance for Blyth as we switched it around from last week.

With both teams looking for goals in the first half it was end to end stuff. Defences having to be on top and midfield battles needing to be won. But it was a wayward pass straight to the Jacks forward that got the opening goal midway through the first half to give them the lead. Sloppy really and below our standards recently set.

Much of the same for the rest of the half as we tried to break through there resilient defence but to no avail. Then just minutes before the break, A cut out pass on the halfway line released the Jacks pacey winger who got away from the defender before cutting in and grabbing a second. 2-0 half time. Punished for mistakes and lacking that killer edge we had in the last few games.

A few changes rang for the start of the 2nd half. The entire front 3 replaced and immediately as we tried to get the dominance back, it was McCrudden on the left winning the first break but unable to get his shot on target.

Joe Marshall introduced on the right was having some luck pushing forward and when Mitchell Miller played his pass across the 18 yard area it was Marshall who made 2-1 with a strong finish.

Mitchell Miller then went down when a 50/50 clash for the ball resulted in a lengthy delay and ambulance being called for what looked like a nasty knee injury. We wish him a speedy recovery and all the best. Fingers crossed he’s back soon. 🧡🖤 Mitch.

When the game resumed with still 35 mins to play it was Johnny Lowes who played the strong McCrudden through again only this time his legs where clipped from behind and the ref pointed to the spot. Lowes converted the penalty down the middle to draw it level. 2-2

Both sides pressed for the winner as you’d expect and with time up on the clock, an injury time almost carbon copy replica of there 2nd goal, Jacks got down the left, cut into the box and the shot found the back of the net. 2-3 Final Score, heartbreaking defeat after a battling back but was a much improved 2nd half performance and showed we had the character to dig deep.

We travel to Northeast Combination Football League - NCFL Premier Division side Cullercoats FC next weekend for our final friendly before our season opener on the 22nd August when we host Cramlington United Football Club Reserves.

We welcomed The Northern Football Alliance - Division 3 side Gateshead Borough to Blyth this afternoon in what was likely to be our toughest test of preseason so far.

An 18 man squad was named with plenty of scope for rotation and with a few missing as well from last weeks squad, minutes for everyone today was going to valuable.

A good start from the front three pressing high & forcing Gateshead into errors meant chances early and when James Angus went through on goal one on one we thought an early lead was coming only for the keeper to smoother the ball well.

We settled into the game though with some good football considering the wind the players were dealing with, defence holding well and dealing with the long ball and flurry of corners for Gateshead. Yet an impressive 6 min spell midway through the half saw 3 goals all coming from quick thinking, quick movement and some great composed finishing.

Firstly Alex Poole quick thinking providing an assist for James Angus, Poole then made it 2-0 when Callum Hunters mazzy 30 yard run into the box and shot was only parried to the feet of Poole who finished well. The third was made by energetic Ethan Shipperly with some great work down the left, he got himself to the byline and into the box before playing the ball neatly back for Angus to finish first time side footing into the centre of the net.

Comfortable at 3-0 we could of added a couple more before half time, Angus unlucky not to get his hat trick when he headed wide from a corner and in added time a curling effort from the edge of the 18 yard area through a crowd of players left Blyth’s keeper rooted and Gateshead had a goal back.

2nd half was going to be one of those, next goals the important one kinda games. And just 5 minutes into the half, a foul on the edge of the box brought shouts for a penalty for Gateshead. But the ref deemed it outside the box inside the D & again the Gateshead forward managed to hit it with perfection into the top right, in off the crossbar. 3-2.

At this point we could easily of folded and allowed Gateshead the ascendancy to get back in and take control but the lads dug in, the game becoming a bit scrappy in spells and when a Gateshead corner was claimed by Goalkeeper James Noble, his quick throw to the impressive Johnny Lowes on the edge of the box was then hit 40 yards for Ethan Shipperly to chase down and with it all to do, he held off the defender and placed the ball past the on rushing keeper from the left edge of the 18 yard area. A deserved goal for the youngster.

But that wasn’t the end of it and with 10 minutes left on the clock Jordan Haig made it 5-2 after Ryan Lashley chased down the defender on the right, he won the ball back before finding Haig who finished well.

An excellent performance and matched mentality today from all 18 players. Next up it’s another friendly on Saturday 1st August as we host Whickham FC Jacks. 2pm Kick Off.
