Why do we stay in discomfort… even when we say we want change?

In the latest episode of the Pain Free Living podcast, Bob Allen and I explore something we see often in our work:

Becoming so used to being uncomfortable that it starts to feel… normal.
Predictable.
Even safe.

The “devil you know.”

Whether it’s persistent pain, stress patterns, unhelpful habits, or familiar thought loops — our nervous system can learn to prefer the familiar over the unknown, even when the familiar isn’t serving us.

We talk about:

- Why the brain and body cling to predictability

- How discomfort can become part of identity

- The subtle difference between resilience and endurance

- What it takes to gently disrupt patterns without overwhelming ourselves

Sometimes the biggest shift isn’t eliminating discomfort — it’s noticing our relationship with it.

I’m curious:

👉 Where in life have you found yourself tolerating something simply because it felt familiar?
👉 What helped you move beyond “the devil you know”?

If this resonates, the latest episode of Pain Free Living is now live (link below). We’d love you to listen, reflect, and join the conversation.

Working from home 1–2 days a week? You could be missing out on a tax-free claim worth up to £312 a year.

Hybrid working is now the norm for many businesses - but we still see lots of people overlooking the tax relief they’re entitled to.

If you work from home (even part-time), you may be able to claim a portion of your household costs, including:
Heating & electricity
Broadband
Rent (if you’re a sole trader)
Business use of a dedicated workspace (via simplified or actual expense methods)

These claims can apply whether you’re an employee, sole trader, or limited company director - the key is making sure you’re using the right method for your situation.

👉 Why this matters: Even small claims add up over the year, and it’s money you’re legally entitled to. We regularly help clients:
✔ Understand eligibility
✔ Choose the most tax-efficient method
✔ Keep compliant records
✔ Avoid common mistakes that lead to missed reliefs

If you’re unsure whether you’re claiming correctly (or at all!), we’re always happy to take a look and point you in the right direction - no jargon, just practical support. Feel free to reach out or drop your questions in the comments. We’re here to help. 🙌

James Clear poses a powerful question:
“What single habit, if implemented consistently for the rest of this year, would transform your life the most?”

Pause for a moment and reflect:
✅ What’s the one small action that would create the biggest ripple effect in your life?
✅ Is it moving your body daily? Practicing gratitude? Setting boundaries?

The beauty of habits is that they compound. One intentional choice today can change your trajectory for the entire year.

💬 Share your answer in the comments — I’d love to hear what habit you’re committing to!

A question for you this Monday morning.

Does this look familiar?

Why not try something different for 2026...

Most resolutions fail because they ask you to add more:
- effort
- discipline
- pressure

Make this year about what can you REMOVE, to give you space, reduce stress and more capacity for the things you care about.

If you would like to talk through what that looks like for you, then message me for a FREE 45 minute, no obligation consultation.

Every December, life just gets busier, the world feels like it is hitting "fast-forward".

However, when we think about it, holiday stress isn't just about the holidays. It's much more about what is already going on for you as we hurtle into the festive period.

December itself doesn't create that stress. It just shines a sparkly light and shows you what is really there. The things that wouldn't faze you in July can tip you over the edge in December and leave you feeling overwhelmed.

So what can you do?

Protect the capacity you already have and start supporting yourself in really small, but manageable ways:

- Step away before you are at breaking point. Just 5 minutes in another room can completely shift how you feel when you walk back in. Not dramatic - just effective;

- Let one thing be easier than you had planned. Buy the mince pies rather than making them. Skip that party you really don't want to go to. Just say "I can't make that work without allowing the guilt to spiral. These are choices you are allowed to make;

- Give yourself one quiet moment every day. Your morning coffee before everyone is awake. Sitting in your car for an extra minute before going inside. Listening to a podcast / music when doing the chores, headphones in. As little as 5 minutes of actual breathing room can reset everything.

If people pleasing is a recurring theme in your life, there are strategies you can employ to better manage this wish (need) to make everyone happy. Christmas included. If you want to find out more, message me via my website for a free discovery call.
