Yoga isn't simply about what happens ON the mat. My aim is to share Yogas Tools & Techniques so that you can live a more fulfilled life OFF the mat too. The first LIMB of YOGA are the YAMAS & NIYAMAS. AHIMSA = "Non-Violence, Non-Harming". On the mat this can be as simple as tuning in to what your body needs that day & letting go of forcing & efforting. It can also mean being aware of unkind, unsupportive thoughts you have about yourself. We have been focusing on the concept of AHIMSA this past 2 weeks. This week i invited students to ask themselves "How can I apply the concept of Ahimsa to my practise today? What does being kind to myself look like today? What does the idea of "Non Harming" look like in today's class?". Whether its setting the intention to be CURIOUS & let go of expectations . . . Or to soften into a pose & surrender effort.
We ended the class by asking ourselves how we could then take this idea out into our day; This can show up in the choices & decisions we make. Whether its using less toxic products (so that we are practising AHIMSA towards the planet) or extending kindness towards strangers.
How Can You apply these concepts into your daily life ? So that every day is an extension of your practice.. ?!

How Often Do We Look At Something Without Really SEE-ING It ๐Ÿ‘

In a world where we've been encouraged to continuously seek the newest bright, shiny thing . . We've sadly become DIS-CONNECTED (From our Body, from our Essence, from the World around us) โœ”๏ธ
DIS-TRACTED (Constantly being bombarded with information)โœ”๏ธ
Overly STIMULATED (Information Overload, 24/7 lifestyle. . . Which leads to OVERWHELM & Adrenal Fatigue) โœ”๏ธ
ADDICTED (To being entertained & the Dopamine hit that comes with every "like & comment")โœ”๏ธ
And
DIS-REGULATED (Our psyche was never designed to be so overwhelmed & over stimulated)โœ”๏ธ

(All leading to the Bored But Stressed Out Generation)

We're either too BUSY or too distracted to notice the beauty of the world around us. . .
. . Or we've become so accustomed to bright shiny things, that the "normal / mundane" goes unnoticed.

Just as with any DRUG, we need MORE & more to achieve the same buzz ๐Ÿ

Most people are so over stimulated that they cannot go more than a few minutes without checking their phones & they'd rather lose a limb๐Ÿฆต than their iPhone. . .๐Ÿ“ฑ

All this stimulation / information overload can actually cause or contribute to Depression & Anxiety . .

Another reason that diagnosis of conditions such as ADHD is increasing at a shocking rate. . .

The ultimate aim of YOGA is to re-turn us to our NATURAL STATE; Which is one of Peace, Calm, Balance, Harmony, Joy-full-ness & Vitality

PEACE Vs Anxiety, Fear-full-ness, Help-less-ness

CALM Vs Over Thinking, Over Worry, Overwhelm

BALANCE Vs Un-balanced, Bi-Polar, Manic behaviour, Erratic Emotions / Mood Swings

JOY-FULL-NESS Vs Hopelessness, Despair, Loneliness

VITALITY Vs Lethargy, Fatigue, Ill-ness & Dis-ease

.. Its about stretching your MIND!
One of the things I'm often saying to my students is that how we show up ON the mat is indicative of how we show up OFF the mat...

In other words, we take our Habits, Beliefs, Behaviours onto the mat.
The idea is to learn to embody even more positive Habits, Beliefs & Behaviours ON the mat, that we can then take into our daily life.

The first LIMB of YOGA are the YAMAS & NIYAMAS (kind of "codes of conduct"; How we treat ourselves & the world around us)

AHIMSA : Non Harming: Non violence in thoughts, words, actions

On the mat, this can be embodied by showing ourselves (& our bodies) absolute kindness, empathy & understanding.

To accept that some days we will feel strong, agile, energetic ...
.. and other days we feel stiff, drained, sluggish...!

By listening to our BODIES - not our Ego-Mind - we show ourselves kindness & compassion.
. .

AHIMSA off the mat can show up as making decisions & choices that cause no harm.
Over the hot bank holiday weekend, a lot of visitors came to beaches in Norfolk. . .and left behind a lot of rubbish & litter.

This is HARM-FULL behaviour.

My parents always taught me to respect other people's property & the world around me.
I could never leave rubbish behind like that! If a piece of rubbish falls out of my pocket, I'm running after it like a crazy woman! If a plastic bag blows past me, i chase it to try & pick it up! If asked why, I reply ๐Ÿ’ฌ "This [planet] is my HOME.."

To show RESPECT for the people & world around you is to embody AHIMSA โœŒ๏ธ

The more we begin to Love & Respect our inner environment (our body) the more we begin to respect our outer environment (the world around us)
Then this becomes a way of BE-ING...

On the mat, we practice AHIMSA by listening to our body, not PUSHING or forcing anything. And by surrendering into a pose, rather than trying to force ourselves into it....

Our natural state is one of Peace, Love, Playfulness, Joy-full-ness, Harmony & Wholeness ...

Think of a child brought up in a healthy, happy environment; They are joy-FULL, play-FULL, and totally accepting of LOVE!

Somewhere along the way we decided we're not good enough (although it's not all our fault! We're bombarded with messages - some subtle, some not so subtle - that we would be happier / better / healthier / more popular / more attractive / more worthy / more fulfilled blah blah blah if we buy / look like / do xyz .... )

Yoga offers us Tools ๐Ÿ”ง & Techniques to reconnect with the part of you that knows you're already enough, exactly as you are....

How You Show Up ON The Mat Reflects How You Show Up OFF It...!

Although the class ideally is place where we pretend we can momentarily "leave the world behind" ...
. it often simply highlights the unhelpful habits & beliefs we carry with us every day..

But that's great!

Because we can then shine a light ๐Ÿ”ฆ on the Thoughts, Beliefs, Behaviours, Habits etc that may be preventing us from living as fully & as freely as we would like !

๐Ÿ‘จ Men are natural Problem Solvers; and they bring this onto the mat, seeing each pose - especially those they find difficult - as a "problem" that needs fixing! The problem is they often bring their "If it doesn't work, apply more FORCE!" attitude with them! (And that doesn't work on the mat!)

๐Ÿ‘ฑโ€โ™€๏ธWomen are more Emotional, Intuitive... Yet they will often judge themselves most harshly & "give up" sooner because they FEEL like a "failure" ..

Yoga isn't all about "Love & Light"!

Its about stripping us bare, so we have nowhere left to hide... And we HAVE to face our own bullsh*t !

Men struggle with the "Less is More" attitude ....

Women struggle with Confidence & having the courage to risk "failure" ...

When we are able to ACKNOWLEDGE those things ...
.. and then stop trying to FIX ourselves

And instead begin OBSERVING ourselves. . .

Allowing...

Surrendering ...
. . We often find things start opening up for us!

We can learn something every single time we step on the mat (even if we spend the whole class in BALASANA - Child's Pose - we can learn something, uncover something, about ourselves)

โ„น๏ธ Absolutely! In fact, the first yogis were men. Now, let's bust some misconceptions... ๐Ÿคฏ

Myth: Yoga is easy. Reality: Many top athletes incorporate yoga into their training. "Low impact" doesn't mean "ineffective" or "easy"!

I love seeing more guys in my classes! They can benefit just as much as women. Plus, who doesn't love a good challenge? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Men tend to struggle with coordination at first (maybe because women use both sides of their brain? ๐Ÿง ). They can also be a bit more... competitive. But hey, we instructors are here to help!

So, why does my bio say I only teach women? Well, I focus on women over 45, but that doesn't mean I don't welcome men! I just like to keep things specific. And if you're a 25-year-old looking for a dynamic vinyasa style, I'm probably not your gal. But if you're looking for a quirky instructor with a sense of humor, let's get this yoga party started! ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿšซ Despite Being a Fitness Instructor I Do Not Use / Wear Deodorant

And having just seen an advert for Dove "All Body Deodorant" - with the tag line of ๐Ÿ’ฌ "Helping you smell beautiful everywhere..." I find it disappointing that YET AGAIN we're being made to believe that something that is perfectly NATURAL is, in some way, UN-PLEASANT, DIS-tasteful, UN-appealing ๐Ÿงโ€โ™€๏ธ

Unless you have a serious medical condition (one that causes the body to produce an UNNATURAL odour) there is absolutely nothing wrong with natural odour!

If you are washing regularly & have no underlying health conditions, your natural odour (Yes, even when you're hot & sweaty) is not & should not be "unpleasant" ๐Ÿšซ

We have Lymph Nodes under our armpits so putting anything synthetic & chemical based there (especially straight after shaving!) can

1) Cause or exacerbate Cancer cells

2) Disrupt your Endocrine System (Hormones)

So now you're being advised to put chemicals on even the most intimate parts of your body...??!?

And we wonder why Cancer rates continue to RISE...?
Why conditions such as Dementia continue to RISE..?
Why Obesity continues to RISE..?
Why Stress, Anxiety & Depression continue to RISE...?

Anything you put ON your skin enters your bloodstream .....
Anything that enters your bloodstream gets transported to EVERY part of your body...

Its estimated that women especially put on 20+ forms of toxic chemicals every day (From shower gel to make up to shampoo to perfume to hair spray ....)

If you DO want to use Deodorant, use a natural solid deodorant.
And do not apply straight after shaving.....!

(Most men prefer your natural smell - pheromones - anyway!!)

I often walk past someone who has obviously drenched themselves in perfume or body spray ... and i literally cough & feel nauseous ๐Ÿคข

Most times when I shower i use nothing but water!

Its not the fault of the doctors; They're simply taught what the pharmaceutical industry want them to think ...

"Modern medicine" is about focusing on suppressing or "coping" with SYMPTOMS... NOT on prevention or CURE

Cures won't make money
Dealing purely with SYMPTOMS keeps you a CUSTOMER for life ... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I couldn't bear the thought of being inside most of the time!

Kids nowadays seem allergic to "outside"
Its a shame they are disconnected from the living, breathing entity that is Mother Earth ๐ŸŒŽ

Children in rural areas engage in daily contact with animals, soil and diverse microbes that โ€œtrainโ€ their immune systems. Exposure to farm-related bacteria and โ€œfriendlyโ€ dirt helps the immune system learn to distinguish between harmful pathogens and benign substances like pollen.

This early โ€œeducationโ€ prevents the immune system from becoming hyper-responsive, significantly lowering the risk of allergies, asthma, and chronic inflammatory conditions. Rural environments promote better regulation of systemic immune activation, which is a key factor in both physical and mental resilience.

A landmark 18-year study found that children raised with the highest levels of โ€œgreen spaceโ€ had a 55% lower risk of developing psychiatric disorders compared to those with the least.
